There are days in which I don´t know if I should be very proud of my little ones or completely terrified.

Tonight, I was trying to put them to bed, quite late already, when they compelled to read a good-night storybook.

Come on, it´s OK. But, of course, each one wants a different one and I tell them that there is no time for both and that they have to come to an agreement.

They begin make such a scene, each one putting her book in my face and shouting that it must be hers, that I make the Solomonic decision of choosing a third one.

Craso error.

Huge mistake.

While I am out, Cachorrito pushes Pirañita beacuse she doesn´t like the book that she chose.

There is when I get mad. I tell Cachorrito that things are not done that way and that, because she attacked her sister, I have decided to read Pirañita´s book.

I explain them that when they fight they stop being right and that they have to resolve things in a different way. And I ask them if they have understood it.

Y Cachorrito me dice toda llorosa: "Sí..."

And Cachorrito tells me all crying: "Yes..."

"Next time, Pirañita has to attack me so that you will read my story."

5 años con Pirañita / 5 years with Pirañita

Today you are the girl of the day. Another birthday.

It has been a hard year as a family and, nonetheless, you have kept up with the situation. You have understood what was expected from you and have exceeded what anyone could ask from so young a girl.

Eres reflexiva e inteligente.

You are a very mature girl. It is not me who says it, it is your teachers, your grandparents and everybody who knows you. You are thoughtful and intelligent.

Eres alegre y dicharachera.

You are shy in the beginning, but behold when you feel comfortable! You are joyful and talkative.

You are not a mass leader, although you are not a follower either. You like to do thing at your own pace and according to your plan. You are a hard worker and pay a lot of attention to the details.

You love to learn and go to school. If there is one day in which we don´t go, no matter if it is because you are sick or we are skipping it because of holidays, you are very disappointed.

You have already told me that you want me to homeschool you. But after school, when we come back home. You are so willing to do and learn new things... Never loose that!

You are very creative. You don´t need too many things, just your imagination and your will to express yourself, to fulfill all kinds of projects. You have a huge initiative and you negotiate with others so that they will help you to achieve your goals.

From a movement point of view, I see you resolutive. There is still a lot to improve but you climb, jump, run... Maybe throwing and catching are your weakest point but, nonetheless, I can see your improvement.

Now you are showing interest for ballet. You don´t want to be one of those ballerinas who have sour feet. You don't want to be a professional. However, the idea of dancing and the music catch your attention.

In general, you like everything music-related. You love singing and you "play" any instrument that falls in your hands. I love all the songs that you sing us.

Tienes tu ritmo.

You have already drawn the line between those who are just classmates and those who are your friends. In general, there are more girls in your chosen group but there is always at least one boy. You have no problem in establishing new relationships, although it is not something that happens with anyone and anyhow. You have your timing.

You are are a good girl, although sometimes you misbehave and then you don't want to talk about it. You already are able to tell the difference between good and bad. Also when to say sorry, although it is sometimes hard to you to do it.

Mi niña inteligente, fuerte, audaz, trabajadora, alegre, divertida, preciosa...

My smart, strong, brave, hard-working, happy, funny, beautiful... girl.

5 años bendiciendo nuestra familia. No nos faltes nunca.

5 years blessing our family. Be always there.

Frases celebres de mis pequeñitas/Famous quotes of my little ones

Espero poder volver pronto.

I have not been around here for a long while and I don´t know when will I be able to do it often. I have a couple of post half written and a lot of things to tell but there are too many things going on in my life and I have to concentrate in what really matters. I hope to be back soon.

In the family room of a hotel, with a bed for the parents and a smaller one for each of my little ones, I hear my oldest daughter's breathing change. Se moves around. She stands. She gets up. She approaches her sister's bed. Se covers her. She kisses her. Her sister moves.

Pirañita: Yo ti he tapado. / I have covered you.

Pirañita covers her sister again. She kisses her again. She opens the bed, finds one of her sister's dolls. She puts the doll in her sister´s arms. She covers her sister again. She kisses her again. She goes back to her bed.

I cannot see her sister, pero she must be doing something. Pirañita gets up.

Pirañita: Mi voy a meter en tu cama contigo. / I am going to go into your be with you.

Cachorrito: Vale. [Silencio] Pero Pirañita, ¡ya es el día! / OK. [Silence] But Pirañita, it's the morning!

Pirañita: No pasa nada. Es fin de semana. No hay colegio. ¡Podemos dormir todo lo que queramos! / No problem. It is the weekend. There is no school. We can sleep as much as we want!

Cachorrito: ¡Qué bien! / Great!

Pirañita goes into Cachorrito's bed.

Cachorrito: ¡No busco a mi otro muñeco! / I cannot find my other doll!

Pirañita: No hay problema. Yo lo buscaré. / No problem. I will find it.

Pirañita abre la cama, La revuelve.

Pirañita opens the bed. She trumbles it.

Pirañita: ¡Aquí está! / Here it is!

Cachorrito: ¡Muñeco! / Doll!

Pirañita se vuelve a su cama.

Pirañita goes back to her bed.

Cachorrito: ¡Ven a mi cama! / Come to my bed!

No, because the hole (the space between the beds) is very small.

But I want that you are in my bed.

Pirañita se pone de rodillas. Se lleva una mano a la barbilla.

Pirañita kneels in her bed. She puts a hand on her chin.

Pirañita: Déjame que tenga una idea. Déjame pensar. / Let me have an idea. Let me think.

After that, they were discussing the distance between the beds, the size, who was closer to who and finally they decided to do what they live the most: Jump in their parents bed, while they are still sleeping!

Felicidad perfecta.

Perfect happiness.

Feliz semana.

Happy week.

In the park, Cachorrito comes to her dad crying.

- Papa, la niña me ha dicho... / Papa, the girl has told me...

An eight-nine year old girl comes behind her and tells my husband:

- I just told her that she is very cute and sweet.

Mi hija llorando a pleno pulmón:

My daughter crying with all her heart:

- ¡Me ha dicho que soy cute and sweet! (mona y dulce) / She told me that I am cute and sweet!

Verduras / Veggies

P: Mama, I want celery. / Mama, quiero apio.

M: It's almost dinner time and Papa is preparing a soup.

P: But I am hungry! / ¡Pero tengo hambre!

M: Dinner is almost ready. / La cena está casi lista.

P: But I want celery! / ¡Pero quiero apio!

M: Ok. While the soup cools down a bit, you can have some celery as an appertizer. / Vale.

P: But Cachorrito doesn't like celery.

C: Yes I do. / me gusta.

P: No, you don't. You have never tried it! / No te gusta. ¡Nunca lo has probado!

C: Yes I do. I like celery. / me gusta. Me gusta el apio.

P: No, you don't! / ¡No te gusta!

M: Pirañita, it is not you who decide what Cachorrito likes or dislikes.

P: But she has not tried it! / ¡Pero no lo ha probado!

C: Yes I have. I like it! / Si lo he probado. ¡Me gusta!

M: Enough! I will prepare some celery. / ¡Basta! Voy a preparar un poco de apio.

P: Great! / ¡Genial!

C: Celery, celery...! / ¡Apio, apio...!

M: Do you want some carrots too? Some hummus to dip? / ¿Queréis zanahorias? ¿Un poco de hummus para mojar?

P: No, just celery. / No, sólo apio.

C: Only celery for me. / Sólo apio para .

Later, talking with my husband about this, he told me that he had to go to the store to buy some ingredients for Cachorrito's lunch because she had a clear idea of what she wanted to eat: Broccoli.

Who said that kids don't like veggies?

El sistema sanitario canadiense / The Canadian health system

Back in the day, I said that I would talk about the Canadian health system and I will do as promised.

The first thing to take into consideration is that here there is a public health system but it is not universal. Not even paying the social insurance every month grants you the right to use the public health system immediately.  You get the right of using the public health system only if you have been paying your fees for three months.

Keeping it short, you only have two options during the first three months after your arrival: A private insurance or not getting sick.

When it comes to this, I cannot complain because my company paid the private insurance for the three first months. Otherwise, I would not have accepted the job.

The next thing to take into consideration is that you don't get a doctor assignment. You have to find your own doctor. In theory, it might sound easy, even good. You choose the doctor that you like the best and done.

Not the case. You have to find a doctor who is accepting new patients and those are scarce. One of the main problems that this country faces when it comes to the health system is the lack of health professionals because they only need to cross the border to the United States to earn much more money.

Another consequence of this situation is the lack of paediatricians, who are treated as specialist for whom you need a referral from the family doctor. Some paediatricians accept new patients in the way we understand a paediatrician would but they are not easy to find, especially downtown.

The family doctor is the one who will refer you to the specialist or medical tests. In both cases, they don't book you an appointment to give you the results. If you have something, they call you. I know a couple of cases in which the people had not been contacted although they had important gynaecologic problems. They found out because they felt bad and insisted in getting the results.

We have been lucky considering the circumstances. A new clinnic just opened next to the office when we arrived and we joined it as a family. The girls don't have a paediatrician but the family doctor has done their revisions, taken care of their shots and sent them to the specialist when needed.

Our experience with the emergency services is just the one related to the accident that I had in January and I have to confess that I am not too happy. Leaving the hospital knowing that you have some broken bones, that you might need to go under the knife and having been attended by a doctor who confesses you that she doesn't know how to read a radiography doesn't sound too professional.

I could also talk about them taking radiographies without running any pregnancy test although I had told them that I might be pregnant.

The follow up after the surgery was good, although I think that I didn't need so many radiographies.

On the other hand, if you don't have an insurance, you just need to be a bit unlucky to run into an astronomical bill. A co-worker wen to the hospital because he was not feeling well lately and being checked by two doctors, an electrocardiogram, blood and urine analytics costed him CAD 7,000.

I like it better that the United States model for sure but I would no doubt choose my Spanish health system.

Invierno en Canadá / Winter in Canada

We are on the way to summer but I would like to talk to you about how was our winter and how it affected our kids.

Winter began in September and we could consider that it transitioned to Spring in May. Yes, you read right, 9 months of Winter! I always say that for me the worst of the winter here is not the low temperatures but that it never ends!

Until December, the weather was more or less gentle. We could reach -10 as a minimum but the rest of the day we were between -4, -6...

However, after Christmas, the true cold arrived. The two digit negative temperatures became the maximum Once we were under -20, the lake began to freeze. Some irresponsible people would walk over the ice every now and then (this lake is like an interior sea and, as a result, it has currents and the density and width of the ice are not constant, which means that it could break at some point and, if that happens, you are putting your life at risk as well as the lives of the rescue teams).

As a curiosity, I will explain the school policies for the temperature:

- If there is snow or it is cold, only the kids wearing snow clothes (pants and boots included) can play outisde.

- From -15 degrees and under it is considered that it is too cold for the kids to play outside and they stay indoors.

- In the morning, it is a must to pay attention to the cold alerts in which they list the schools that are closed because the temperature is so extreme that they are afraid that the kids might die waiting for the bus.

- The school bus must leave each kid at his/her doorstep and wait until the kid is inside the house before moving to the next one. The reason behind this is that, if there is nobody at home, the chikd could die at the door of his/her own home.

Leaving the house is one of the first processes affected by the winter cold. When the kids (and adults) have to begin to wear layers of clothes, hats, gloves, snow pants, snow boots... Leaving the house is a process that takes to infinite and beyond

A veces ambas.

And then you have to return, of course, because you have to pick and tidy up all the clothes and manage the boots which will be either wet or you´ll have to clean to get rid of the salt that are on the streets. Most times both.

We decided that -10 degrees was the lowest temperature for us to go to the park as usual. Eventually, we have gone outside on colder weather to ice skate or play with the slide, but it has been exceptional because we considered that it was too clod even with appropriate clothes

To be fair, with the right clothes you can go to very low temperatures with an acceptable level of comfort. The problem are those parts of the body that are not covered by clothes. In general, small areas in the face and the eyes. Even with glasses, which are not exactly clothes, you get that sharp cutting feeling. From -20, any part of the body in contact with the air

One of the main problems with extreme cold is that it burns, specially if it is windy and in the exposed areas.

One day, my husband was going to pick our daughter up from school and the little one fall asleep in his arms. He didn't notice it but the wind was on the girls face and she ended up with some red areas where her skin was burned. Luckily, it was not serious but it might have been dangerous would the temperature or the wind be more intense. Sometimes the skin fades and people loose pieces of the ears and the nose.

On the other hand, there is the problem of being stuck at home.

If you live down town, you can use the tunnels to go from building to building and walk throught the commercial areas. If you have a car, you can go to the mall. Anyway, you usually spend a lot of time at home or at other people's homes, which means reduced space for the kids.

Our youngest daughter had an excess of energy which avoided her from napping. Ever. Even more, she would ask permission to go to the corridor of the building, which was quite long, and run from one end to the other one to vent out. My poor little one reminded me of those hamsters who live a cage and run on the wheel because, if not, the would die of boredom.

However, Winter also has a beautiful side. The Niagara Falls froze and, although we couldn't go until they had partly melted, they were still amazing.

Ice skating, making snow men, tobogganing... are not things that you can do any time in Spain in most regions.

Winter is the time to gather in someone's home and for the kids to destroy the place enjoy some time together while their parents chat and have a hot coffee/tea.

Winter is beautiful and fascinating. I love when the snow is loose and you can see how the wind moves the snowflakes and models snow dunes. I am fascinated by the ferries crossing the frozen lake. I think that it is amazing to see the cars driving as usual in roads that would force us to use chains in Spain (here they use Winter tires). Of course, even better to watch all these things through the window.

My husband is not very keen about the Winter and doesn't want to spend another one here. It has been cold and hard. I also think that it was an intense life experience. It is a mix of fascination and hate that is hard to explain.

3 años con Cachorrito / 3 years with Cachorrito

I could tell you the story of when you were born again, which you don´t stop to ask me to repite again and again since some months ago. You love me telling you the details and hugging you while I whisper again those first words that I told you the first day, the only one in which I have talked to you in Spanish: "Eres preciosa. Eres maravillosa." (You are precious. Have anyone ever told you that you are the most beautiful thing in the World? You are gorgeous." Although I think that your favorite part is when Superpara arrived with a blue and white pijamas with trucls, a hat and blue mittens to get you dressed for the first time.

Creces demasiado deprisa. ¡Ya tres añazos! ¡Y yo con estos pelos!

You are growing up so fast. Three years already! How come!

Eres activa, traviesa, dulce, audaz, divertida, irrepetible...

You are active, sweet, bold, funny, unrepeatable... You want to do everything your own way and get mad when things are not according to your plan. Later, something does click in your little head and it seems to be you trying to convince everyone that it is not that bad. Anyway, your tantrums are epic. You love being petted and tickled. You are crazy about being treated as a ragdoll and to be set in all positions: Head-up, head-down, hanging from your legs, flying in Superpapa´s arms...

Every now and then, you need to vent off your extra energy and, if there is no better option, you go to the building corridor to run up and down, racing with your Dad or sister if possible. Now Mama is not to good at that.

You grosse motor skills are good and also your blossoming fine motor skills. Your first letters have been beautiful, clear, armonic in size and space. I would even say that they were small. Good por you!

Y luego has vuelto a lo anterior.

You have gone to the hiperdetailed drawing from one moment to the next one. Then you went back to the old stuff. You do what you feel like and love drawing maps and explainning them to us.

You are very independent and trangressive. You are affraid of nothing, unless you want to play to be affraid. Then you hold us and look afraid because you have decided that this is what you want to try. You play like a grown-up girl. You like to build with the legosÑ Buildings, people, furniture, vehicles...

You love Froze. It is your favorite movie, although you accept to watch others. But you like Anna and Elsa. You want to know everything about their sibling relationship, why they cannot play together, what happenned to their parents, why are they sad...

That and La vida es así.. ("La vie")... You often ask what is a white cell, a bateria, why are the viruses bad...

They are only two examples of how you need to understand, how much you like to be explainned everything, understand its origin and function. And it includes the daily stuff: You bear, your toys, the family members... You want to know each one´s story.

You are a gorgeous girl. You understand everything and, as I always say: "Making a little effort, you are able to do whatever you want."

Thank you for these three years, in addition to the pregnancy. Living with you is an amazing adventure and I reject to miss any of it.

¡Felicidades!

Happy Birthday!

Today, February 22, 2015, Cachorrito´s lactation has finished. She has been not having breastmilk since January 3, but today is the day that we are officially out of business.

¿A qué se debe este retraso?

Why this delay?

Because the girl kept thinking that, when Mum wouldn´t be broken anymore (on January the 4 I broke my right kneecap and both elbows), she would be nursed again. And today is the day. Today, when I was putting her to bed, I asked if she wanted to be petted in the petting armchar where I used to nurse her and that we hadn´t used since our last breastfeeding. She run to the armchair at once and has been waiting for me playing and laughing.

In my arms, while I hugged her, she asked to be nursed. I asked her if, 3 days before being 3, she was maybe too old to be nursed. It was clear in her mind: No.

Well, I have prepared the breast and she has began to do her thing to realize, just seconds later, that there was no milk. Not in the other one either, because we have done the proper comprobation.

No sé cómo explicarlo.

I confess that I haven´t encouraged her to keep trying, to create enough stimulation for everything to go back to work, if that was an option. I knew that we were about to end the breastfeeding and the cricumstances have forced the situation. Now it would feel like going in the wrong direction if we would go back to breastfeeding. I don´t know how to explain it.

It has been precious, to have my Chachorrito at the breast, sfotly holding, trying to find that last milk drop that was not there anymore.

In the beginning, I felt sad. It has been the moment when she has really realized that breastfeeding was over, no more Mum´s delicious milk which, based on her words, was amazing. She told me that she remembers its taste and I have told her to treasure that because not all kids are so lucky as to be nursed till that late and that she is fortunate that way. I think that she understood it, although it was hard on her.

A very important thing that had to be explained is that she doesn´t need to be nursed to be in Mum´s arms, to have our peaceful moment before going to bed, to be on my lap and be petted.

During my illness, she has slept on my body many times, caresed by my hands, my voice and covered of my kisses. She know that all these is there for her and that it won´t be denied to her.

Hoy es un día agridulce. Hoy he perdido para siempre a mi bebé.

Today is a sour-sweet day.  Today I have lost my baby forever. Today my little one is a bit bigger.

De lesiones, destetes y relación con los hijos / About injuries, stop breatfeeding and relatioship with the children

I'm getting to my sixth week of involuntary reclusion. And no, it has nothing to do with the fact that here is as cold as it can get. It has to do with the fall that I sufered in the beginning of January in which I broke both elbows and the right kneecap.

After a good bunch of hours in the emergency room, I got home without a diagnosis, inmobilized and with a date for the trauma doctor 10 days later (I'll write a post about the Ontario health system in the future). It was late because I fell on my way back from work (no, it seems that this is not considered a work injury here) and my elder daughter was sleeping. However, Superpapa was with Cachorrito in his arms because she was waiting for her bedtime nursing.

With a lot of love, we explained her that Mum was broken and not able to nurse her. It was hard for me to accept the implications but I couldn't figure out how to nurse in that situatio, even more taking into account how much my daughter moves.

I must say that she accepted it with resignation. She allowed her father to carry her around, as he had been doing for a while, and fell ashleep within minutes. The poor thing must have been fighting to keep awake.

Those first 10 days were very hard on everyone. I was dependant for everything: Moving, eating, going to the washroom, showering... My husband had a 70 kg baby in addition to his usual two little ones. And no, I didn' t even allow him to sleep all night long because I had to go to the toilet.

It wasn't easier for the girls. From one day to the next one, their mum was untouchable, literally. I would spend the day sitting on the couch asking them not to come so close, to play so close, to climb up the couch...

The older one was dealing with it but it was too much for the little one not be allowed to touch Mum.

Our bedtime routine was over and there was no way to put the little one in bed until she would pass out by herself. We were going to bed later than late every night.

Epiphany Day found me on the couch, watching my daughters enjoy it and feeling a kind of sadness for not being able to be 100% involved.

My diagnosis came in pieces. Mi first visit to the trauma doctor revealed that I didn't need a suregery in the knee and that my less painful elbow was broken. They ignored the other one because it showed no fracture. It wasn't until two visits later that they x-rayed the elbow again to find that it was broken too.

Here, the trauma doctor comes with the physiotherapist behind so I began to work on my recovery. It was basically inflict pain to myself and keep it togheter.

When I was doing my exercises I couldn't stand the girls being around or talking to me. I was very grumpy and unpleasant. Later, the pain hangover didn't help either. I would find some time to read a story, talk about the day or watch something on TV with them. However, I would hide in my bubble not to be hostil to them.

One day, Superpapa was overwhelmed. The little one wouldn't sleep no matter what and the lack of rest was paying back. He was so nervous and desperate that it was impossible for the little one to fall sleep.

I talked to him and with the girl and we made a risky decision. I lied in the coach and put the girl over myself, trying to avoid her from kicking my kneecap when she moved. We began to watch a documentary about dogs and turned the light off.

She was warm, with this smell that´s hers, that´s mine, breathing slowly. The sweetest moment in weeks.

Poco a poco, he ido mejorando.

Very slowly, I have been improving. I don´t depend so much on Superpapa and the girls spend more time with me and over my "fixed leg", as they call it. I still take them away and am grumpy with the physiotherapy pain but I try to make it happen while we are watching a show or documentary together and it seems to work for us.

This injury is very hard but also educative. I am learning a lot about my family, my daughters, my husband, the world around us, the people who care about us and those who only care about themselves.

My younger daughter says that she will be nursed again when Mum is fixed. Truth is that I don´t know if want to even try to. After two month of weaning, and being three years old, I don´t see so much value in going back to nursing and, in addition, I was already perceiving that it was not going to last for long.

Pain, tireness, frustration... They are sometimes there and there is nothing that we can do to get rid of them. Our children deserve the best possible parents that we can be and, right now, that sometimes mean to stay away, maybe not from a physical but from a psychological perspective.

No sé cómo explicarlo.

It´s hard to spend so much time with them without them. I don´t know how to explain it.

My long working hours steal a lot about my girls from me and, now that I am home, I cannot enjoy them, not in the way that I would like to. It sometimes depress me.

Anyway, we are together and love each other and that is what matters. And, although it is not an ideal situation, I think that it is helping us to learn about respecting others, their personal spaces, times, feelings and state of mind.

It is not an experiece that I would recommend you but, if you are living something similar, don´t desperate. It will also brign good things to your life.

No, I won't write about how to keep your home neat and clean in the everyday chaos.

I'm not writing lately be ause I don't have the time. It is that simple and complex. I have a couple of drafts gettimg dusty and a lot of ideas that will never see the light.Life is like that.

These days I cannot stop reading lists of New Year goals and things that we want for 2015. I decided years ago not to do that anymore because it doesn't work for me. I don't even know in what country I'll live at the end of the year (or continent for that matter) so I live day by day.

But I have plans, projects, ideas... And those things sometimes distract us from what is importante. And sometimes life force us to look at everything from a different angle so that we won't forget what really matters.

Yesterday my shoe laces made me change mi viewpoint. A stamble that makes you value what you already have.

Yesterday I broke my right knee and my left elbow, in addition to a muscle injury in the other elbow that hurts way more than the broken one. I cannot it by myself, I cannot go to the washroom by myself, I cannot shower by myself....

And there is the Superpapa, a greater hero than ever, giving everything and treating me as a queen. There are my little ones filling me with their love so that I will feel better. There are my friends, the old and new alike, giving us all the support that the circumstrances allow.

What do I want for 2015? Too late to ask for health. I hope to have enough money to keep going. I'm served when it comes to love. Keep living and fighting is the only thing that comes to my mind.

Happy 2015 and I wish that the Wise Men will come carrying all the thimngs that are important in life, although you might already have them.
