Hijos fuertes / Strong children

When someone thinks of the virtues that are desirable for his child, strength is not usually the first choice. It might be because we think in physical strength. However, helping our kids to be strong and able to endure the hard situation that they will have to face during their lives is very important.

As parents, we don't want our children to suffer and we try to protect them to the best of our ability. It is a natural reaction, although not always the best for our kids.

Hoy veía éste vídeo.

Today, I watched this video.

She is a girl who has lost her home, who lives a refugee center and, despite of all that, she is a girl who has been able to adjust to this situation and grow with it. I am talking about this kind of strength. This is what I want for my children.

We are lucky enough to be migrants, to have experienced hard times, farewells, unexpected situations... Sometimes, it has been very hard but it has made us grow.

I think that my daughters have become strong this way. They are able to accept and endure hard situations in a way that surprises those who don't know them and even us.

I don't want to impose them unnecessary suffering. However, I hope that an easier future doesn't spoil this strength that they have developed and that it keeps growing in them, making them able to
cope with any challenges that they will face in life with a smile.

Adiós 2015 / Good bye 2015

We started the year in our home, between the CN Tower and Lake Ontario, with some friends and co-workers and the family of one of them. We ate grapes, Spanish style, and cheered with Argentinian and French wines.

4 days later I broke my knee and both elbows. It was the beginning off an immobility period for me and big limitations for the family. Winter got to its coldest soon later, surrounding us of snows that would be there for months to come and freezing the lake that we could see through our window, my only contact with the outside.

We enjoyed the hospitality and friendship of my co-workers. They helped us during all the recovery process, first sending us already-cooked meals and the with the transport and making things easy for us so that we could keep going.

The girls kept growing and Superpapa, myself and Cachorrito had our Birthdays. Friends of each of us came home and we spent precious moments with them.

Estaba nublado.

Our plan of going on holidays was out of the question due to my injury. However, we took a long weekend as soon as I was able to drive and went North. We wanted to visit many things but most everything was closed during the winter. There was a solar storm but we couldn't see the Northern Lights. It was cloudy.

The lake began to unfreeze and we could take the ferry to the island through the ice blocks that floated on the surface.

We went the Niagara Falls and enjoyed some family time.

My work was getting momentum and spring meant that the end of the project was coming fast. Long hours in the office, days in which I would leave before the girls woke up and come back when they were already fast asleep, working on weekends... I was having less and less time for the family.

It was a Sunday night when I came back from work and my husband told me that, because he was not seeing me anyway, he was considering to go to Spain with the girls for the summer holidays.

Before they left, I took another long weekend and we went back to the North. Now everything was open and we saw the first buds on the trees. Spring as we know it was knocking our door.

Farewells are not easy, so I bought tickets to visit the family for 4 days in the middle of the transition between implementation blocks in the project. I took them to the airport and, after crying a bit, I went back to work.

The month was done fast. I was wroking non-stop and there was no time for anything, even for thinking. In addition, every day was a day closer to see my family.

We finished the first block of the project and I headed to the airport. I have never been so happy in an airport or an airplane. I knew that each second moved me closer to my family. It is hard to explain.

My husband didn't know it but the day of my arrival we were renewing our marriage vows and having a little party with the family. It was intimate and endearing.

Those days went fast and I had to go back to Canada.

The second part of the project was not so intense but I didn't want to stay at home. Anyway, we had to decide where we were going after the end of the project. My husband didn't want to stay in Canada and I had a job offer in London. However, it was part time and far from enough to live on it.

The answer arrived when my husband called me to tell me that he also had an offer in London (UK) and that he was moving there in two weeks. The little ones were staying with their grandparents in Spain. Now the family was split in three different countries.

I organized the moving and I took a plane heading Gatwich, London, the moment my contract was over. My husband was waiting there for me to start our new life in the United Kingdom.

The plan was easy: Find a home, a school and bring the girls to the country.

Once we found a school, I went to pick up the girls. I didn't want to be another second without my little ones!

The girls started school and we kept looking for a school. Every day, we were sleeping in a different place and we would go all around the city between schools, potential housing views and getting wherever we were sleeping that night. It was like this for a month, up to two since we first set a foot in London. They were hard months with never-ending days between tiredness, trips, rain... But we finally found a headquarters.

Our new home was an hour and a half from Pirañita's school. Although we were happy with the school, it was taking her 3 hours of commute, 4 to the rest of us to make it happen. That is why we had to consider changing her to another school.

Less than a month after moving to our new home, the elevator and the dishwasher broke. None of them have yet been repaired. We live in a fourth floor with two little ones and my knee is not fully recovered yet. They expect it to be 4 months until it is fixed, since it broke. British inefficiency.

Right before Christmas, we were offered a place in a school in our area for Pirañita. We don't love the place whilst we have not made a decision. We will probably change her if we are not given any reason not to do it. If we get two hour back every day, we can compensate that the school is not that good.

Superpapa is very happy with his job, and so am I. The part-time job allows us to coordinate ins and outs from school and to care them without any extra help.

We already had a very good friend in London. Now we have more. We are very lucky and have found great people in this country.

We couldn't go to Spain for the holidays but we are enjoying some lovely Christmas. We are together, which is what matters. After spending almost three months without my children this year, I assure you that I know the accurate value of that gift.
