¡Adiós dientes! / Bye, bye, teeth!

In July, Pirañita showed us that two of her teeth were moving. She was very excited dreaming about what the Ratoncito Pérez (the mouse who takes care of these things in Spain instead of the Tooth Fairy).

She was expectant all August but the teeth wouldn't fall. However, in August the 31st, she lost a pebble she was playing with in he street. I didn't think of it until I realized that there was a hole in her mouth.

Mamá: ¿Dónde está el diente? / Where is the tooth?

Pirañita: Se me ha caído al suelo. / It felt to the floor.

Mamá: ¿Y ahora qué hacemos sin diente? ¿Vendrá el Ratoncito Pérez si no tenemos el diente? / What will we don now? Will the Ratoncito Pérez bring you anything without the tooth?

Yes. He will look for it in the street and leave my gift under the pillow.

¡Y tenía razón!

And she was right!

She wrote a letter to the Ratoncito Pérez and he left her a gift: A bag with a toothbrush, toothpaste and tooth cleaners.

She has already lost another one and there are 18 more to come.

¡Qué mayor está nuestra peque!

Our little one is already so big!

Preparando la vuelta al cole en Londres / Getting ready to go back to school in London

I am reading advice about how to save in the "back to school" campaign most everywhere. It is in moments like this that I realize that there are some things that need improvement in the Spanish system.

Here in London, September is not as financially terrible as in Spain. It is true that you have to get the new season clothes ready but most of the clothes from last year still fit in my kids' case. In addition, the younger one is inheriting all the clothes that are too small to her sister. I had to buy some uniform pieces to increase our current stock. Here the uniform can be purchased in any store and doesn't need to display the school logo so I did some online shopping in a budget store and that was it. Everything that I bought cost around 40 pounds, including some clothes stickers that I just liked despite of being a bit expensive.

It is also true that I plan to add some homemade items but they won't really be cheaper than the ones I bought in the retailer. I might have spent 10 or 12 pounds more, even 20 if I would have gone rampant.

Here we don't buy school books, stationery and even the school meals are free until year 2. From year 2, you can send packed lunch and there is no additional cost. In addition, our headteacher decided to give each kid starting in the school a bookcase, so we don't even have to bother about that one.

For the families with lower incomes, our school has a uniform pool made of clother that some families have donated so that they don't even have to spend in that.

Educación gratuita, pero de verdad.
