Tiempo de calidad / Quality time

Today I´ll takl about what people calls quality time.

You leave early, before the rest of the family is awake. You work for hours, eat a sandwich in the elevator coming back from the coffee shop. Meetings, deadlines, documentation... You spend the days dealing with lots of stuff in that head of yours. Finally, one or two hours after the timing you signed in your contract, you leave the office to go home.

You get home and there they are: Your little ones, your partner, your family. Then you think in how close bedtime is, in you not being there to take care of your little one´s last bruisse. You hear your elder daughter talk and notice that she is not pronouncing that word in the very funny way that she used to. And the you realize all those things that you are missing.

It´s then when the idea of compensating them breaks into your head. You want to do something special. You want every minute to be special because you want to fit 24 hours in 120 minutes.

¿Y sabéis qué?

And you know what?

No funciona.

It doesn´t work.

Quality time is being there for your children when they need you, with your partner when he needs you, with your family when they need you.

The so called quality time is no more than a plain lie that we tell ourselves you fool ourselves to think that we can compact a lifetime in a sucession of odd moments.

I don´t wan quality time. I want to spend time with my daughters and see them grow up. And I´ll fin the time to do it no matter how.

Bilingüísmo forzado: Merece la pena/Forced biliguism: Totally worth it

Today I come to talk again about the way we have worked in the bilinguism at home and the results that we are getting.

As a matter of fact, the process has been as simple and as complex as deciding that one of us would speak in English to our children (my husband) and the other one in English (that´s me). In the beginning, It´s a bit hard to speak in a language that is not yours, but it feels natural when you get used to it.

There were people who looked at us as if we were freaks and other thought that we were dreamers, but we never gave up.

First, we noticed that Pirañita was able to understand everything. After that, she said her first words in both languages. At a certain moment, she decided to speak in Spanish and she would do it even if I was talking to her in English. In the end, I had to force the situation a bit, not answering her unless she was talking to me in English. Not long after, she was talking both languages at her age level.

With Cachorrito we had a similar process. She began understanding, then she said her firts words in both languages... However, we didn´t need to force anything with her. Her sister was speaking two languages and so was she.

To give you an idea of my little daughter´s English level, the day that we arrived to Canada she came with me to go through the inmigration paperwork while Superpapa and Pirañita were taking care of our lugage. I sat her on the counter and we were talking. She would ask questions that I would answer. It seems that the policeman that was attending us had a son of her age and was astonished that she could talk in English so well. Even more, at some point, he asked me how could it be possible that she talked so well, no matter what the language was. It seems that he was comparing her with his Canadian Native-English-Speaker son and my daughter had a higher level.

You can imagine that I was more than proud of my daughter´s skills.

Intentadlo.

A lot of people ask me how did we do it and I always answer the same: It´s just making the decission and not giving up. It is totally worth it. If you are considering doing the same, stop the doubts and go for it. Even if your children are a bit older and you didn´t began when they were babies, it´s never too late to give it a try.

My daughters have adapted to the new country awesomely and looking at other children in similar situations I notice that knowing the langage has been one of the reasons of this success.

Ve a por ello. Tus hijos te lo agradecerán.

Go for it! Your children will be gratefull!

Trucos para aprovechar el tiempo con los peques, cuando se tiene poco / Hints to get the most of the time with spend with the kids

Since I am a full-time working mother, I have less time to enjoy with my girls and it is patent. I miss them so much!

After the first weeks of work, I began to think that I had made a mistake, that we should not be here, that I won´t stand not seeing my daughters grow up and all those things that I will miss because they will happen on my working hours.

Then, I found out that my husband was having a great time being a houseband, enjoying his daughters in way that he had never considered, and it changed the way I perceived the situation: I´m not home, so that he can be there. This way, I accepted that our chores distribution has changed and that the one enjoying our daughters is him. That´s how I reconciled with this situation, although it is still hard on me.

The thing is that I´m spending less time with the girls and, besides, I´m very tired during the time that we are togethers. That´s why I have had to build some strategies to get the most from our time together:

1. Go outdoors: The summer here is like the springs we are used to, so we have to stay home many days because it´s rainning. Besides, the time will come when being outdoors for the sake of it will not be possible because it will be too cold. As a result, and when the weather allows, we go to the park, have a picnic on the roof, go for a walk, go to the beach... Whatever, but outdoors and together. Being outdoors is always an opportunity to share endearing moments.

2. Listen to your kids: They know what they want and how they prefer to spend the time that they share with you. Ask them about their day and try to give them what they want, everytime the circumstances and the common sense allow.

3. Make a family moment from the routines: Now, I´m bathing with the girls most every day and we have dinner all together more often. Going to bed, snaking, having a nap... Everything can become a special moment with a bit of love and devotion.

4. Share your hobbies: Read a book, draw, play a boardgame or a videogame, watch a movie, hike, practice sport... Take your hobbies, addapt them to your kids' ages and go for it! This way you will be building the habit of sharing moments together.

5. Don´t be too ambotious: Our days of infinite activities are over. It doesn´t mean that we are not having any activities anymore, it´s just that we have to choose and it is time for playing outdoors. When winter comes, we´ll have plenty of time to do some indoors stuff. Not lots of things, just one at a time. Our time is now limited and we have to choose. The important thing is that we realize it so that we won´t be overwhelmed because we don´t reach our unachievable objectives. Our kids need us to spend time with them. That´s what matters.

You already know that I don´t beleive in the so called "quality time". I think that it´s the lie that those who have no time for their kids tell themselves. However, even those of us who have little time available can do something to improve the time we spend with our kids: Organize everything in order to spend as much time as possible with them.

Cómo nos educaron y cómo educamos / How we were educated and how we educate

The other day, I was having lunch with a group of co-workers: A bunch of Italians, a couple of Canadians, a United States citizen and me. Although only four of us have children, most of them have kids in the family, mostly nephews.

We were talking about the kids and that it is not acceptable to hit a kid nowadays, although all of us, no matter our culture or nationality, have received more than one slap in our childhoor without dramatic consecuences in our development.

No, I´m not coming to claim in favor of going back to hitting the kids. I think that not doing it anymore is a proof that the society advances and the way we behave and we respect others is improving, even when it comes to the kids.

What I wan to share ir the experience of talking with people from different nationalities, even different continents, just to find that our personal experiences as children and parents alike has been very similar, even in the differences. I guess that it is a side-effect of globalization, or maybe just part of the societies evolution.
