Today I come with my second pattern test for my oldest daughter's school uniform. You can see the first test here.

It is the free Easy Summer MuuMuu pattern by Pretty Prudent

They say that it is for girls between 3 and 6 year-old but I think that it has to be a pretty big 3 year-old for the dress not to be too big.

Me gusta cómo queda.

I don't know if I cut the ruffles wrong but only 3 didn't cover all the chest so I added a fourth one. I like the final result.

Of course, I added pockets with decorative ribbon. In my house the pockets are a must.

I really like the sleeves, much more than those of the previous dress.

It is easy to cut and build and, although I was not fully convinced with the original 3 ruffles, it has been pleasant to work on it.

My daughter wants her uniform with the sleeves and neck of the first one and the ruffles of the second one. I told her that I don't feel that the ribbon and the ruffles are compatible, which she does not want to hear.

Aquí tenéis los dos vestidos juntos. Ya me diréis cuál os gusta más.

Here you are both dresses together. Feel free to let me know which one you like the best.

A ver qué hago al final. Seguiremos informando.

Let's see what we do in the end. I will keep you posted.

It had been less than two weeks since we started in the new school and since we had been exposed to the phonic method to learn to read and write. On top of the work done at school, we had been reading books, both commercial and custom-made, and following the All About Spelling method that we bought last year and almost opened and closed when we changed schools.

Obviously, this is not something that happened in two weeks but the result of a much longer period of time in which different methods had been applied. However, it was on January 21st, 2016 when Pirañita wrote her first story 100% by herself. For the first time, it is not a told story, nor a drawn one, but plain text wirte without assistance. A written story by its own right.

One of the trending topics among mothers these days, no matter where they live, is what school has been assigned to the their children.

It is a trending topic in UK and Spain. In Canada it was also trending around this time of the year for what I remember.

As you already know, I have gone through the admission process in 3 different countries, 3 different educative systems and 3 different admission criteria. If you allow me, I will summarize a bit.

In 2013, we applied for admission for Pirañita in 3 year-old kindergaden in Spain, in the Madrid province.

In 2014, we applied again for Pirañita, this time for Junior Kindergarden in Ontario, Canada.

In 2015, we applied for Pirañita for Senior Kindergarden in the French Immersion Program in Ontario, Canada.

In 2015, we applied for Pirañita in England, UK, first in an international school and then in a local school. For Cachorrito, we applied for Nursery School also in a local school.

In 2016, we had to apply for admission for Cachorrito in a local school in England, UK.

We have gone through 7 admission processes in 4 years (only counting schools, I don't include the daycare). It is to be expected to have learnt something during the process...

The first thing that we learnt is that all admission processes are unfair for everyone, especially those who end up in the schools that nobody wants.

In the Madrid province, they have a points system that is quite random. It changes from year to year and some of the points are assigned by the schools based on their own criteria, not having a common criteria for all the schools.

Advantages: It is assumed that you can choose among a huge variety of schools without being conditioned by your home address.

Disadvantages: Nobody grants you a spot in a good school that is at a reasonable distance from your home. Actually, nobody grants you a spot in a good school, no matter where it is.

In Ontario, the school is assigned based on your home address and the borough of your choice. There are two School Boroughs, the Catholic and the State one. Based on which one you choose, you can go to the closest school that the borough has to your home. In addition, you can choose for your children to be educated in either English or French, starting at certain stages. That can also mean a different school offer. Other than that, there are independent schools sustained with public funds. Those ones usually assign places based on a draw (playing the lottery for your child's education).

Advantages: There is not too much uncertainty and you will always be offered a school close to your home (or as close as the borough and the language that you want are available).

Disadvantages: If the school that is close to your home is bad, you have little option other than moving homes.

In England, the school is assigned by priority. The state schools have common criteria: Fostered kids, kids with siblings in the school, kids who live closer to the school... The religious schools sustained with public funds have the same criteria but they prioritize those who share their religion: Religious fostered kids, other fostered kids, religious kids with siblings in the school, other kids with siblings in the school,  religious kids who live closer to the school, other kids who live closer to the school...

For the religious schools you need a proof of practice that your religious leader has to provide you. It means that you must not only have gone through basic rites in your religion but also to be an active part of the community, attending weekly to the celebrations. To be clear: Attendance is recorded.

Advantages: It is supposed to offer the parents the chance to choose the best school for their kids, specially to those who want a religious education.

Disadvantages: If you don't live at the doorstep of the good school, you might have to travel a certain distance to go to the bad school that nobody wants.

Among the three countries, the school that convinced me the most was the Spanish one. We decided to move to a different town in order to get a place in it and we did.

The British school made me very anxious. Right now, I am fairly happy although worried about the big pressure on the "stage tests" (however, that is nation-wide, not just a problem in our school). I will talk about it in more detail some time in the future.

The school that I liked the least was the Canadian one. If my husband would have been on the same page, I would have changed our daughter. Nobody wants to send the kids to a school with so bad a teacher that they fire her before the year ends and where they have confirmed to find needles in the playground every now and then. If we would have stayed in Canada, we would have changed schools the next year because we got a place in the French Immersion Program.

¿Mi modelo preferido?

Which admission system do I prefer?

El canadiense.

The Canadian one.

¡Pero si el colegio no te gustaba!

But you didn't like the school!

No, I didn't like the school but that means that the parents put pressure on the schools to improve. They don't have too many options and, as a result, it is something that concerns all the community. And no, not only the school community. A good school in the area increases the real state value and, as a result, everybody benefits for good schools.

On the other hand, if you like a certain school, you move to its area and that's it. If you live there, they grant you a place, even if they have to open a new group (in my daughter's school it happened last year).

It is true that moving is an option that is easier to talk about than to implement because of the housing prices in the good school areas. However, higher prices in good school areas happen in all the countries in which I have lived, so it is just the way of things.

The Spanish and British systems are too random. You have no control over the points or the number of applications and you have to play the lottery and wish for your profile to be good enough to get in that year. If that is not the case, anything can happen. We were lucky but we might had not been and find ourselves without many alternatives.

When we have a look at the admission processes, we tend to think that they are the set of rules to get the kids to the best schools. However, what really happens is that the admission processes are the criteria to decide who fills the places in the schools that nobody wants

In the end, the problem is that there are bad schools. And no, I won't accept the socio-economic excuse. There are streets in every other place where there are two schools and one of them is good and the other one is bad. That doesn't have to do with the area. It doesn't have to do with the economical or social background of the parents. It is not because the kids are like this or that. The problem is the schools and the fact that no appropriate measures are taken into action.

Choosing schools, other than the religious/moral/ideological/pedagogic feelings of each family should not exist. If all the state schools were good. If all the religious schools were good. If all the alternative schools were good. If all the schools were good... Why would anyone cross to the other end of town to take the kids to an almost-the-same-school to the one that is next door to their home?

Choosing schools? Yes, based on religious/moral/ideological/pedagogic feelings and lifestyle of the kid's family. Other than that, automatic assignation of the schools that is closer to your home/workplace (in Spain the workplace counts the same as the home address and it is quite convenient for many families). But, of course, the first thing is that all the schools must be good

Frases célebres: Somos de ciudad / Famous quotes: We are city people

The first option represents the conversation in its original language:

Pirañita: Look! My mucus are not black!

Pirañita: ¡Mira! ¡Mis mocos no son negros!

---

Superpapá: Parad un momento. Escuchad. ¿Oís la carretera?

Niñas: Sí.

Superpapá: Pero, ¿a que es agradable? Casi no se oye.

Superpapá: Stop! Listen. Can you hear the highway?

Girls: Yes.

Superpapá: Yes. But it is pleasant, isn't it? We can almost not hear it.

---

Mum: Tomorrow we are going on an outing for a picnic.

Pirañita: Yeah! I want you to rent a car.

(We used to rent a car to go out of Toronto last year)

Mum: No, we are going walking.

Pirañita. But I want you to rent a car!

Mamá: No, vamos a ir andando.

---

Cachorrito: Mama, I want you to rent a car.

Mum: Where do you want to go with a car?

Cachorrito: I want to go to find the rainbow.

Mum: Darling, the rainbow only appears when it is raining and sunny at the same time and now it is sunny without any clouds in the sky.

Cachorrito: Then we will have to travel very far.

Mum: We might not find rain clouds even if we travel very far.

Cachorrito (singing): Clouds come, clouds come, clouds come, clouds come...

Mum: Darling, if it rains then we cannot go tomorrow to the fun fair.

Cachorrito (singing): Clouds don't come, sun come, clouds don't come, sun come...

Cachorrito (cantando): Venid, nubes. Venis, nubes. Venid, nubes. Venid, nubes...

Mamá: Cariño, si llueve, mañana no podremos ir a la feria.

Cachorrito (cantando): Nubes, no vengáis. Sol, ven. Nubes, no vengáis. Sol, ven...

When I finished them, I was so fed up that I decided not to post about them.

So here we are, publishing them 2 years later.

We had one of those sleeping bags for babies that my two girls loved, so they used to fight for them. When it was too small for Pirañita, I decided to sew a sleeping bag for each girl.

They were an instant success. The two of them loved them. At home they are known as the "caterpillars". They have used them to sleep and to play, being specially useful for traveling.

I didn't use any pattern or tutorial. I think that they are the first thing that I sew my own way.

They close on the top with snaps and on the side with a snap and a zip.

The inside is from a sleeping sheet from Ikea. The outsides are one from Ikea and the other one from my town's flee market. In between, they have flence from Ikea too. (I realize that I buy too much in Ikea). I bought the bias and the decorative bow in a local store in my town. The girls chose them for this project.

Hice fotos para hacer un tutorial. Igual algún día me animo.

I made pictures for a tutorial. I might write it one day.

Yo soy una madres estupenda / I am a wonderful mum

I just read an article talking about the virtues of those called "badmothers" because today is Mother's Day in Spain. And no, I didn't forget to add the link, it is just that I didn't want to give the free publicity.

I am not a perfect mother because I am a person and persons are not perfect.

Childen don't have the right to have perfect parents, but parents who love them and, when it comes to that, nobody can beat me.

I make all my life decisions based on my love to my daughters. Sometimes I'm right and sometimes I'm not. They are not the only thing in my life but I can grant you that they are the most important one.

Of course that I want to have a successful career, and be a hiker, and go on a cruise to the fiords in Norway...

Sometime we have has to renounce, hard personal renounces, so that I got the education and career that I wanted to have. It has been thanks  to renounces, generosity and family efforts.

Pero mis hijas son lo primero. Siempre lo han sido. Siempre lo serán. No quiero que sea de otra manera.

But my daughters are the first. They have always been. They will always be. I don't want it any other way.

Y no, no me gusta limpiar. Ni planchar. Ni ir corriendo a todas partes. Ni imponer disciplina. Ni hacer remiendos.

And no, I don't like cleaning. Or ironing. Or to run all day to every commitment. Nor to discipline. Or fix things.

But life is that way. You have to assume the responsibilities that come with your decisions. And having kids is a decision that I would never change.

Because I like to play, and learn, and see the World through their eyes, and cuddle them, and fly with their imagination, and cook they favorite meal, and put a smile in their lips, and do something special with them, and set them for bed at night, and tickle them in the morning, and read them stories... I love them and the wonderful girls that they are. I love to be part of their lives.

I am not perfect but I am an amazing mother. If there is someone who wants to glorify herself of being a badmother, or whatever other tag that they want to apply to themselves, they can, as long as they let the rest of us be. I am a mother and that is the only tag that I accept.

¡Feliz día de la madre!

Happy Mother's Day!
