Maternidad e intimidad (I) / Motherhood and intimacy (I)

I have been reading other moms' blogs for years. I take good ideas from some, comfort from others, I have stopped reading some...

In some of them, the moms talk about that unknown world of "time for oneself".

Over the years, I have repeated this mantra that came straight from the deepest of my soul:" I don´t need to rest from my children, I need to spend as much time as possible with them."

I didn't feel like I were better for that. It is just how I was feeling. I thought that, the same way that some people need more personal space, some mums need more intimacy than others.

¡Ilusa de mí!

Silly me!

Ladies and gentlemen, I confess here and now: It is now the time when I need time for me. Not for my partner (although I actually need it too now that I come to think about it), not to have a coffee with a friend (although I would gladly do it if I had the chance), not to meet new people (although we moved here half a year ago and I still don't know any of my neighbours)... I NEED TIME FOR ME.

And no, it is not a selfish "me". I don't want time to go shoppping (although I need new clothes) or have a massage (although I will accept any offer because my back aches badly). It is time to spend with my own self.

It can sound weird but I need time to be with no-one. Other mums practice yoga, pilates, go to cupcake decoration courses... I only want to be some time without anyone talking to me, without anyone interrupting me, without having to ask anyone to do something that should already be done or to stop something that someone is doing and shouldn't.

Si no llueve, claro.

As a result, and almost as a medical prescription, I have decided to inscribe my daughters in the dance class that they wanted (and it doesn't make me feel so bad because they asked for it before I came up with this plan) and I go for a walk during that time. Yes, yes, a walk. I am that low maintenance. I walk an hour and half. If it doesn't rain, it is. For the rainy days I have not that elaborate a plan (yes, erratic walking is an elaborate plan for me nowadays), but I will come up with something.

I don't turn off the cellphone because I use it to take pictures during my walks. I don't turn off the cellphone because I use it to time the 20 minutes that I have to run as a prescription from my physiotherapist. I don't turn off the cellphone because I walk in a different direction every day and I need to make sure that I am in time to pick up the girls and I use the map for that.

Pero no leo emails, mensajes, cojo llamadas... NADA.

But I don't read emails, messages, answer calls... NOTHING.

Mi paseo. Mi tiempo. Mi espacio.

My walk. My time. My space.

Probando patrones para el uniforme 1: Scattered thoughts Peasant dress / Testing patterns for the uniform 1: Scattered thoughts Peasant dress

Today, I am sharing my first pattern test for the school uniform. I am also joining the linking party Menuda inspiración, a blog carnival in which we share what we have sewed for out little ones.

I was searching for dresses in plain fabric that would be easy to sew and I found the Scattered thoughts website with her Peasant dress. I liked the idea of doing the version with the open neck, so I made my life a bit harder than necesary.

To make the bias, I used the tutorial that she suggests. It took me a couple of attempts to align it properly to cut but once I tested with some pins, it was just cutting and ironing. I find this process takes too much effort but now I know how to do it and that is what matters.

I choose the 7-8 size because it is the one my daughter uses. However, I don´t know if I cut too big or if it is because it is American size but it was too big. I had already sewed the neck and left it how it was but I reduced 1 cm on the sides. Now it fits perfectly.

It is the first experience with ruffles and, although I have to improve, I am happy on how they look.

For the sleeves, I folded and inserted an elastic.

My daughters are always finding treasures (sticks, stones, leaves...) and the pockets were a must. I sewed them were she wanted them. My feeling is that they are too log but she is happy.

I decorated the pockets with ribbon, one with the "handmade" logo and the other one with flowers, both bought in a crafts store.

I bought the blue fabric in the same store and the pick one in Ikea. You had already seen the later here and here.

Seguiremos informando.

This is a good candidate for the school uniform, specially with this kind of neck because I think that it looks smarter. Anyway, we'll see how my next experiment looks like. Keep tuned.

And, given that the owner of the dress didn't want to be in the pictures, here we have our top'model. Isn't she a natural?

Colarse en cama ajena / Sneak into someone else's bed

It is sometimes a door opening in the middle of the night and the sound of steps approaching you in the dark. Other times it is a kick in the face that you cannot decide if it gave you back your self-consciousness or just made you lost it. Occasionally it is the realisation that   there is an empty bed during your night patrol. It can also be a well-known smell close to your nose.

We might complain many times of the kicks, bumps, backaches or lack of room that their night visits produce but the worst is the addiction that they generate.

Yo no puedo resistirme.

I cannot resist it. How many times do I sneak in their bedroom to watch them, smell them, kiss them, whisper in their ears that I love them and give them the night blessing! And, if I am longing them too much, it is me sneaking in their beds and hugging them and enjoying them a little bit before the sun rises and we start again with the races, the responsibilities and the absences.

Yo me confieso adicta. ¿Y tú?

I confess that I am addicted. And you?

Bandanas / Headbands

I am trying patterns for my older daughter's Summer uniform (I will show them at some point) and, when I start cutting fabric, it is non-stop!

What else could I do with this piece? Did you say a headband matching the dresses?

Y dicho y hecho.

So be it.

Patrón y tutorial de Scattered thoughts of a Crafty Mom.

Pattern and tutorial from Scattered thoughts of a Crafty Mom.

Telas from Ikea that I bought because they were cheap and I would find a use for them, don't you think?

And, now that I have the headbands, it might be time to begin to sew the dresses that I have already cut, don't you think?

Bolsa para botella / Water bottle bag

Hacía tiempo que no compartía una costura.

It has been a while since I last wrote about a sewing project.

In Pirañitas school, the kids must have their own water bottle. That is normal. What I don't feel as so normal is that we have to take it home to fill it EVERY DAY. No kidding.

We take it empty and fill it in the fountains that they have in the playground because we think that it is quite annoying to be carrying a filled bottle around.

Anyway, we have to walk the bottle around everyday and I don't like the idea of putting in in the bookbag, even if it is empty.

¿Solución? Una bolsita para llevarla y traerla.

Solution? A bag to carry it around.

It took me a moment to make it. I sized the fabric putting it around the bottle and adding some extra space to put it in and pull it out plus the sewing margin. For the length, I added a good piece on top and on the bottom. 100% eye-sized.

I made the bottom like in Rojo Ababol's pencil bag

For the top side, I folded and sewed the top in a decorative way before introducing a lace and making a decoration with beads.

I bought the fabric in Ikea because it had a good discount and it is the one Pirañita wanted.

The thread is red in contrast with the pink background and matching with the polka dots.

The bees ribbon was part of a craft set to decorate hair bands.

The thread is part of a thread set for crafts and the beads were bought in the pound store.

Una bolsa sencillita y resultona.

A simple yet useful bag.

And its owner could not be happier.
