3 años con Cachorrito / 3 years with Cachorrito

Podría contarte otra vez la historia de cuando nacisate, que no dejas de pedirme que te repita una y otra vez desde hace un par de meses. Te encanta que te cuente los detalles y que te abrace y te susurre aquellas primeras palabras de aquel primer día, la única vez que te he hablado en Español: "Eres preciosa. ¿Te han dicho alguna vez que eres la cosa más bonita del mundo? Eres maravillosa."

Aunque creo que lo que más te gusta es que Superpapá llegara con un pijama azul y blanco con camiones, un gorro y manoplas azules para vestirte por primera vez. 

I could tell you the story of when you were born again, which you don´t stop to ask me to repite again and again since some months ago. You love me telling you the details and hugging you while I whisper again those first words that I told you the first day, the only one in which I have talked to you in Spanish: "Eres preciosa. ¿Te han dicho alguna vez que eres la cosa más bonita del mundo. Eres maravillosa." (You are precious. Have anyone ever told you that you are the most beautiful thing in the World? You are gorgeous." Although I think that your favorite part is when Superpara arrived with a blue and white pijamas with trucls, a hat and blue mittens to get you dressed for the first time. 

Creces demasiado deprisa. ¡Ya tres añazos! ¡Y yo con estos pelos! 

You are growing up so fast. Three years already! How come!

Eres activa, traviesa, dulce, audaz, divertida, irrepetible... Quieres hacer todo a tu manera y te enfadad cuando las cosas no salen de acuerdo con tu plan. Después, algo hace click en tu cabecita y eres tú quien parece querer razonar con otros que no es para tanto. Eso sí, tus perretas son épicas.

Te encantan los mimos y las cosquilla. Te chifla que te traten como un muñeco de trapo y te pongan en todas las posiciones: Cabeza arriba, cabeza abajo, colgando de las piernas, volando en brazos de Superpapá... 

 You are active, sweet, bold, funny, unrepeatable... You want to do everything your own way and get mad when things are not according to your plan. Later, something does click in your little head and it seems to be you trying to convince everyone that it is not that bad. Anyway, your tantrums are epic. You love being petted and tickled. You are crazy about being treated as a ragdoll and to be set in all positions: Head-up, head-down, hanging from your legs, flying in Superpapa´s arms...

De vez en cuando, necesitas soltar energía y, si no encuentras nada mejor, sales al pasillo del descansillo de la planta y corres de un lado a otro, a ser posible echando carreras con tu padre o tu hermana. Ahora Mamá no da mucho juego para eso. 

Every now and then, you need to vent off your extra energy and, if there is no better option, you go to the building corridor to run up and down, racing with your Dad or sister if possible. Now Mama is not to good at that.

Tienes una buena motricidad gruesa, pero también una motricidad fina floreciente. Tus primeras letras han sido hermosas, claras, armónicas en tamaño y espacio. Me atrevería a decir incluso que pequeñas. ¡Bien por ti! 

You grosse motor skills are good and also your blossoming fine motor skills. Your first letters have been beautiful, clear, armonic in size and space. I would even say that they were small. Good por you! 

Has pasado del garabato al dibujo hiperdetallista de la noche a la mañana. Y luego has vuelto a lo anterior. Haces lo que te apetece y te chifla hacer mapas y explicárnoslos. 

You have gone to the hiperdetailed drawing from one moment to the next one. Then you went back to the old stuff. You do what you feel like and love drawing maps and explainning them to us. 

Eres muy independiente y transgresora. Nada te da miedo, a menos que quieras jugar a que te da miedo. Entonces te abrazas y te asustas, porque decides que hoy es eso lo que quieres probar.

Juegas como una niña mayor. Te gusta construir mil cosas con los legos: Edificios, personas, muebles, vehículos... 

You are very independent and trangressive. You are affraid of nothing, unless you want to play to be affraid. Then you hold us and look afraid because you have decided that this is what you want to try. You play like a grown-up girl. You like to build with the legosÑ Buildings, people, furniture, vehicles...

Y te encanta Frozen. Es tu película favorita, aunque admites ver otras. Pero te gustan Anna y Elsa. Quieres saber todo sobre su relación fraterna, por qué no pueden jugar juntas, qué les ha pasado a sus padres, por qué están tristes... 

You love Froze. It is your favorite movie, although you accept to watch others. But you like Anna and Elsa. You want to know everything about their sibling relationship, why they cannot play together, what happenned to their parents, why are they sad...

Eso, y La vida es así... Preguntas de forma recurrente qué es un glóbulo blanco, una bacteria, por qué son malos los virus... 

That and La vida es así.. ("La vie")... You often ask what is a white cell, a bateria, why are the viruses bad... 

Son sólo dos ejemplos de cómo necesitas entender, lo mucho que te gusta que te expliquen las cosas, entender su origen y su función. Y eso incluye lo cotidiano: Tu oso, tus juguetes, los miembros de la familia.... Quieres sabes cuál es la historia de cada uno.

They are only two examples of how you need to understand, how much you like to be explainned everything, understand its origin and function. And it includes the daily stuff: You bear, your toys, the family members... You want to know each one´s story. 

Eres una maravilla de niña. Lo tienes todo y, como siempre te digo: "Con un poco de esfuerzo, eres capaz de hacer lo que quieras." 

You are a gorgeous girl. You understand everything and, as I always say: "Making a little effort, you are able to do whatever you want." 

Gracias por estos tres años, más los previos de embarazo. Vivir contigo es una aventura apasionante que no me pienso perder. 

 Thank you for these three years, in addition to the pregnancy. Living with you is an amazing adventure and I reject to miss any of it.

El fin de la lactancia / The end of breastfeeding

Hoy, 22 de febrero de 2015, se ha terminado la lactancia de Cachorrito. Lleva sin mamar desde el 3 de enero, pero hoy es el día en que oficialmente nos consideramos destetadas.

Today, February 22, 2015, Cachorrito´s lactation has finished. She has been not having breastmilk since January 3, but today is the day that we are officially out of business.

¿A qué se debe este retraso?

Why this delay?

A que la niña seguía pensando que, cuando Mamá ya no estuviera tan rota (el día 4 de enero me rompí la rótula derecha y los dos codos), podría volver a mamar. Y hoy ha sido el día. Hoy, cuando iba a acostarla, le he preguntado si quería mimos en el sillón de los mimos, el sillón en el que solía tomar el pecho y que no habíamos utilizado desde su última tetada. En seguida, ha corrido al sillón y me ha esperado jugando y riéndose.

Because the girl kept thinking that, when Mum wouldn´t be broken anymore (on January the 4 I broke my right kneecap and both elbows), she would be nursed again. And today is the day. Today, when I was putting her to bed, I asked if she wanted to be petted in the petting armchar where I used to nurse her and that we hadn´t used since our last breastfeeding. She run to the armchair at once and has been waiting for me playing and laughing.

Una vez en mis brazos, mientras la abrazaba, me ha pedido pecho. Le he preguntado si, a 3 días de cumplir 3 años, no era demasiado mayor para mamar. Ella lo tenía claro: "No".

In my arms, while I hugged her, she asked to be nursed. I asked her if, 3 days before being 3, she was maybe too old to be nursed. It was clear in her mind: No.

Total, que he me sacado la dominga y allí que se ha puesto ella al tema para, a los pocos segundos, constatar que no había leche. Tampoco en la otra, pues hemos hecho las comprobaciones pertinentes.

Well, I have prepared the breast and she has began to do her thing to realize, just seconds later, that there was no milk. Not in the other one either, because we have done the proper comprobation.

Confieso que no la he animado a seguir, a generar una estimulación suficiente para que todo volviera a ponerse en marcha, si eso era una opción. Sabía que el destete estaba a la vuelta de la esquina y las circunstancias han forzado la situación. Ahora sentiría que fuerzo en el otro sentido, si volviéramos a lactar. No sé cómo explicarlo. 

I confess that I haven´t encouraged her to keep trying, to create enough stimulation for everything to go back to work, if that was an option. I knew that we were about to end the breastfeeding and the cricumstances have forced the situation. Now it would feel like going in the wrong direction if we would go back to breastfeeding. I don´t know how to explain it.

Ha sido precioso, volver a tener a mi Cachorrito al pecho, agarrada suavemente, tratando de encontrar esa última gota de leche, que no llegó a salir.

It has been precious, to have my Chachorrito at the breast, sfotly holding, trying to find that last milk drop that was not there anymore.

Al principio se ha puesto triste. Es el momento en que ha sido realmente consciente de que ya no habrá más pecho, ni la deliciosa lechecita de Mamá que, según ella, está buenísima. Me ha dicho que recuerda su sabor y le he dicho que lo atesore, que no todos los niños llegan a tomar el pecho hasta tan tarde y que es una pequeñuela afortunada. Creo que lo ha entendido, aunque le ha costado.

In the beginning, I felt sad. It has been the moment when she has really realized that breastfeeding was over, no more Mum´s delicious milk which, based on her words, was amazing. She told me that she remembers its taste and I have told her to treasure that because not all kids are so lucky as to be nursed till that late and that she is fortunate that way. I think that she understood it, although it was hard on her.

Una cosa muy importante ha sido explicarle que no necesita mamar para estar en brazos de Mamá, para tener nuestro momento de mimos tranquilotes antes de acostarse, para enroscarse en mi regazo y que la acaricie.

A very important thing that had to be explained is that she doesn´t need to be nursed to be in Mum´s arms, to have our peaceful moment before going to bed, to be on my lap and be petted. 

Durante mi convalecencia, ha dormido muchas noches sobre mi cuerpo, acariciada por mis manos, arrullada por mi voz y cubierta de mis besos. Ella sabe que todo eso está ahí para ella y que no se lo voy a negar.

During my illness, she has slept on my body many times, caresed by my hands, my voice and covered of my kisses. She know that all these is there for her and that it won´t be denied to her.

Hoy es un día agridulce. Hoy he perdido para siempre a mi bebé. Hoy mi niña se ha hecho un poquito más grande. 

Today is a sour-sweet day.  Today I have lost my baby forever. Today my little one is a bit bigger.

De lesiones, destetes y relación con los hijos / About injuries, stop breatfeeding and relatioship with the children

Voy camino de mi sexta semana de reclusión involuntaria. Y no, no tiene nada que ver con que aquí haga un frío del carajo, sino con la caída que tuve a principios de enero y en la que me rompí los dos codos y la rótula derecha. 

 I'm getting to my sixth week of involuntary reclusion. And no, it has nothing to do with the fact that here is as cold as it can get. It has to do with the fall that I sufered in the beginning of January in which I broke both elbows and the right kneecap.

Después de un buen puñado de horas en urgencias, volví a casa sin diagnóstico, inmobilizada y con una cita para el traumatólogo para 10 días más tarde (ya haré una entrada sobre la sanidad del estrado de Ontario). Era tarde, porque me caí volviendo del trabajo (no, aquí parece que no se considera accidente laboral), y mi hija mayor dormía. Sin embargo, Superpapá me espraba con Cachorrito en brazos, que estaba esperando su pechito nocturno.

After a good bunch of hours in the emergency room, I got home without a diagnosis, inmobilized and with a date for the trauma doctor 10 days later (I'll write a post about the Ontario health system in the future). It was late because I fell on my way back from work (no, it seems that this is not considered a work injury here) and my elder daughter was sleeping. However, Superpapa was with Cachorrito in his arms because she was waiting for her bedtime nursing.

Con mucho cariño, le explicamos que Mamá se había roto y no podía darle su pechito. Me costó aceptar lo que implicaba, pero no veía el modo de dar el pecho en esa situación, especialmente con lo que se mueve mi hija.

With a lot of love, we explained her that Mum was broken and not able to nurse her. It was hard for me to accept the implications but I couldn't figure out how to nurse in that situatio, even more taking into account how much my daughter moves.

Debo decir que lo aceptó con resignación. Dejó que su padre la paseara, como llevaba rato haciendo, y se quedó frita en pocos minutos. Debía haber estado luchando para mantenerse despierta, la pobre.

I must say that she accepted it with resignation. She allowed her father to carry her around, as he had been doing for a while, and fell ashleep within minutes. The poor thing must have been fighting to keep awake.

Esos primeros 10 días fueron durísimos para todos.Yo era dependiente en todos los sentidos: Moverme, comer, ir al baño, lavarme.... Mi marido tenía un bebé de 70 kilos, además de las dos pequeñitas habituales. Y no, ni siquiera le dejaba dormir del tirón, porque tenía que ir al baño.

Those first 10 days were very hard on everyone. I was dependant for everything: Moving, eating, going to the washroom, showering... My husband had a 70 kg baby in addition to his usual two little ones. And no, I didn' t even allow him to sleep all night long because I had to go to the toilet.

Para las niñas no fue más fácil. De un día para otro, su mamá se convirtió en intocable, literalmente. Me pasaba el día sentada en el sofá, pidiéndoles que no se acercaran tanto, que no jugaran tan cerca, que no intentaran subirse al sofá...

It wasn't easier for the girls. From one day to the next one, their mum was untouchable, literally. I would spend the day sitting on the couch asking them not to come so close, to play so close, to climb up the couch...

La mayor lo llevaba con resignación, pero para la pequeña era demasiado eso de no poder tocar a Mamá.

The older one was dealing with it but it was too much for the little one not be allowed to touch Mum.

La rutina de la noche se nos fue a freir espárragos y no había quien metiera a la pequeña en el catre hasta que ella misma caía por su propio peso. Nos acostábamos a las tantas todos los días.

Our bedtime routine was over and there was no way to put the little one in bed until she would pass out by herself. We were going to bed later than late every night.

El día de Reyes me pilló en el sofá, mirando como mis hijas disfrutaban y envuelta en una cierta tristeza por no poder involucrarme al 100% en la celebración.

Epiphany Day found me on the couch, watching my daughters enjoy it and feeling a kind of sadness for not being able to be 100% involved.

Mi diagnóstico llegó por fascículos. Mi primera visita al traumatólogo reveló que no habría que operar la rodilla y que el codo que menos me dolía estaba roto. El otro lo ignoraron vilmente porque no mostraba fractura. No fue hasta 2 visitas más tarde que decidieran hacerme una radiografía de ese codo, en la que se constató que estaba roto también.

My diagnosis came in pieces. Mi first visit to the trauma doctor revealed that I didn't need a suregery in the knee and that my less painful elbow was broken. They ignored the other one because it showed no fracture. It wasn't until two visits later that they x-rayed the elbow again to find that it was broken too.

Aquí el traumatólogo va con fisioterapeuta detrás, así que empecé a hacer ejercicios para recuperar la movilidad. Básicamente, consistían en autoinflingirme dolor y aguantar el tirón.

Here, the trauma doctor comes with the physiotherapist behind so I began to work on my recovery. It was basically inflict pain to myself and keep it togheter.

Cuando hacía los ejercicios, no podía soportar que las niñas anduvieran cerca o que me hablaran. Me ponía muy gruñona y desagradable. Después, la resaca de dolor tampoco ayudaba. Sacaba algún momento para leer algún cuento, hablar del día o ver algo en la tele con ellas, pero me encerraba en mi burbuja para intentar no serles hostil.

When I was doing my exercises I couldn't stand the girls being around or talking to me. I was very grumpy and unpleasant. Later, the pain hangover didn't help either. I would find some time to read a story, talk about the day or watch something on TV with them. However, I would hide in my bubble not to be hostil to them.

Un día, Superpapá estaba superado. La enana no se dormía ni a tiros y la ausencia de sueño le estaba pasando factura. Estaba tan nervioso y desesperado que era imposible que la niña pudiera dormirse.

One day, Superpapa was overwhelmed. The little one wouldn't sleep no matter what and the lack of rest was paying back. He was so nervous and desperate that it was impossible for the little one to fall sleep.

Hablé con él y con la niña e hicimos una apuesta arriesgada. Me tumbé en el sofá y me puse a la niña sobre el torso, intentando controlar que no me diera una patada en la rótula cuando se movía. Pusimos un documental de perros y apagamos la luz.

I talked to him and with the girl and we made a risky decision. I lied in the coach and put the girl over myself, trying to avoid her from kicking my kneecap when she moved. We began to watch a documentary about dogs and turned the light off. 

Estaba calentita, con ese olor suyo, tan mío, respirando pausadamente. El momento más dulce en semanas. 

She was warm, with this smell that´s hers, that´s mine, breathing slowly. The sweetest moment in weeks.  

Poco a poco, he ido mejorando. Ya no dependo tanto de Superpapá y las niñas pasan más tiempo conmigo y sobre mi "pierna arreglada", como dicen ellas. Aún las aparto y me pongo hosca con el dolor de la fisioterapia, pero intento hacerlo coincidir con ver juntas alguna serie o documental y parece que nos funciona.

Very slowly, I have been improving. I don´t depend so much on Superpapa and the girls spend more time with me and over my "fixed leg", as they call it. I still take them away and am grumpy with the physiotherapy pain but I try to make it happen while we are watching a show or documentary together and it seems to work for us.

Esta lesión está siendo dura, pero también muy educativa. Estoy aprendiendo mucho sobre mi familia, mis hijas, mi marido, el mundo que nos rodea, las personas que se preocupan por nosotros y sobre mí misma. 

This injury is very hard but also educative. I am learning a lot about my family, my daughters, my husband, the world around us, the people who care about us and those who only care about themselves. 

Mi hija pequeña dice que volverá a mamar cuando Mamá esté arreglada. La verdad es que no sé ni si quiero intentarlo. Tras dos meses de destete, y siendo una niña de tres años, no veo tanto valor a relactarla y, además, ya empezaba a percibir que nos quedaba poco. 

My younger daughter says that she will be nursed again when Mum is fixed. Truth is that I don´t know if want to even try to. After two month of weaning, and being three years old, I don´t see so much value in going back to nursing and, in addition, I was already perceiving that it was not going to last for long. 

El dolor, el cansancio, la frustración... A veces están ahí y no hay nada que puedas hacer para elimimarlos. Nuestros hijos merecen los mejores papás que podamos ser y, en este momento, a veces eso supone ausentarme; si no físicamente, sí mentalmente. 

Pain, tireness, frustration... They are sometimes there and there is nothing that we can do to get rid of them. Our children deserve the best possible parents that we can be and, right now, that sometimes mean to stay away, maybe not from a physical but from a psychological perspective. 

Es duro pasar tanto tiempo con ellas, sin ellas. No sé cómo explicarlo.

It´s hard to spend so much time with them without them. I don´t know how to explain it.

Mis largas horas de trabajo me roban mucho de mis hijas y, ahora que estoy en casa, no puedo disfrutarlas. No tanto ni del modo en que querría. A veces me deprime un poco. 

My long working hours steal a lot about my girls from me and, now that I am home, I cannot enjoy them, not in the way that I would like to. It sometimes depress me. 

Pero bueno, estamos juntos y nos queremos, y eso es lo que cuenta. Y, aunque no sea una situación ideal, sí creo que está ayudándoles a aprender sobre el respeto al otro, a sus espacios, sus tiempos, sus sentimientos y sus estados de ánimo.

Anyway, we are together and love each other and that is what matters. And, although it is not an ideal situation, I think that it is helping us to learn about respecting others, their personal spaces, times, feelings and state of mind. 

No es una experiencia que os recomiende, pero, si os veis en una como ésta, no desesperéis, también traerá cosas buenas a vuestra vida.

It is not an experiece that I would recommend you but, if you are living something similar, don´t desperate. It will also brign good things to your life.

Las cosas en su sitio / Everything in its place

No, hoy no vengo a hablar de cómo mantener vuestra casa ordenada en el caos del día (no poseo esa perla de sabiduría, aunque bien que me gustaría).

No, I won't write about how to keep your home neat and clean in the everyday chaos.

Últimamente no escribo porque no tengo tiempo. Así de simple y complicado. Tengo un par de borradores cogiendo polvo y un montón de ideas que nunca llegaré a materializar. Así es la vida.

I'm not writing lately be ause I don't have the time. It is that simple and complex. I have a couple of drafts gettimg dusty and a lot of ideas that will never see the light.Life is like that.

Estos días de inicio de año no dejo de leer propósitos y cosas que le pedimos a la vida. Yo decidí hace tiempo dejar de hacerlo porque no me funciona. Ni siquiera sé en qué país acabaré el año (o en qué continente, para el caso), así que vivo al día.

These days I cannot stop reading lists of New Year goals and things that we want for 2015. I decided years ago not to do that anymore because it doesn't work for me. I don't even know in what country I'll live at the end of the year (or continent for that matter) so I live day by day.

Pero sí tengo planes, proyectos, ideas... Y a veces todas esas cosas nos despistan de lo importante. Y también hay cosas que vuelven a ponar las cosas en perspectiva, para que no olvidemos lo que realmente importa.

But I have plans, projects, ideas... And those things sometimes distract us from what is importante. And sometimes life force us to look at everything from a different angle so that we won't forget what really matters.

Ayer el cordón de mi zapato me puso en mi sitio. Un tropezón que te hace valorar lo que tienes.

Yesterday my shoe laces made me change mi viewpoint. A stamble that makes you value what you already have.

Ayer me rompí la rodilla derecha y el codo izquierdo, además de producirme una lesión muscular en el brazo derecho que hace que duela más que el que está roto. No puedo comer sola, no puedo ir sola al baño, no puedo ducharme sola...

Yesterday I broke my right knee and my left elbow, in addition to a muscle injury in the other elbow that hurts way more than the broken one. I cannot it by myself, I cannot go to the washroom by myself, I cannot shower by myself....

Y ahí esá el Superpapá, más heróico que nunca, dándolo todo y tratándome como una reina. Ahí están mis pequeñas, llenándome de mimos para que me sienta mejor. Ahí están los amigos, los de siempre y los que hemos hecho aquí, dándonos su apoyo en la medida de sus posibilidades.

And there is the Superpapa, a greater hero than ever, giving everything and treating me as a queen. There are my little ones filling me with their love so that I will feel better. There are my friends, the old and new alike, giving us all the support that the circumstrances allow.

¿Qué le voy a pedir a 2015? Es tarde para la salud, me temo, espero tener suficiente dinero para salir adelante y de amor estoy bien servida. Seguir viviendo y luchando es lo único que se me ocurre.

What do I want for 2015? Too late to ask for health. I hope to have enough money to keep going. I'm served when it comes to love. Keep living and fighting is the only thing that comes to my mind.

Feliz 2015 y que esta noche los Reyes vengan cargados de todas las cosas importantres que hay en la vida, aunque igual ya las teníais.

Happy 2015 and I wish that the Wise Men will come carrying all the thimngs that are important in life, although you might already have them.

¿A qué edad el primer móvil? / What age for the first cellphone?

Creo que el debate más relevante no es si deben o no tener un móvil, sino qué formas de comunicación ponemos a su alcance y bajo qué condiciones.

I think that the most relevant question is not if they should or not have a cellphone but what communication tools do we give them and under what conditions.

Si queremos poder llamarles y que nos llamen, el móvil más básico (y barato) es más que suficiente. Pero eso no es ni lo que ellos están pidiendo, ni el modo en el que quieren usarlo.

If we want to call them and for them to call us, the most basic cellphone (and the cheapest) is more than enough. However, that's not what they are asking for or the use that they plan to give it.

Los niños quieren un juguete con acceso a internet que les permita instalar juegos y otras aplicaciones, a la par que comunicarse con sus amigos por mensajería. En pocas palabras, quieren tener internet en el bolsillo, a ser posible 24/7.

The kids want a tyoy with internet access which allows them to install videogames and other apps, as much as it allows them to chat with their friends. Going to the point, they want to have intrernet in their pocket, 24/7 if possible.

Internet no es bueno ni malo y lo de menos es el dispositivo que utilizamos para acceder. Internet es esa famosa "cuidad global" en la que, como cualquier ciudad, hay zonas mejores y peores, más seguras y más peligrosas, buenos ciudadanos y auténtico monstruos.

Internet is not good nor bad and the device that we use to access doesn't matter at all. Internet is that famous "global town" in which, as in any other city, there are better and worse zones, safwer and more dangerous, good citizens and real monsters.

Del mismo modo que educamos a nuestros hijos a ir por la calle, hemos de educarles para navegar por internet.

The same way that we educate our kids to move in the street, we have to educate them to surf the net.

Si no dejarías a tu niño de 8 años solo en medio de una gran ciudad, sin ninguna referencia y sin más razón que porque a su amigo Pepe sus papás le dejan pasearse por donde quiera cuando le dé la gana, ¿por qué le vas a dejar solo delante de una pantalla, sin ninguna orientación y sin más razón que porque todos los niños de su clase lo hacen?

If you wouldn't leave your 8 year-old child in the middle of a big city, without aby references and with no other reason than that Joe's parents allow him to go wherever he wants any time, why would leave your kid in front of a screen, with no guidelines and with no other reason than the fact that they schoolmates do it?

Los niños han de aprender a moverse por internet igual que en el resto de los ámbitos de la vida y nuestra obligación es asegurarnos de que lo hacen de acuerdo a su madurez, conocimientos y capacidad.

The kids need to learn to handle internet the same way that they do with evrrything else in life and it is our responsibility to ensure that they do it according to their maturity, knowledge and capabilities.

No creo que haya una respuesta única para tu pregunta. Es comparable a si preguntaras cuándo se debe dejar a un niño/adolescente moverse por el mundo y volver a casa a una hora determinada. No hay una única respuesta válida. Cada familia tiene que valorar el caso de cada hijo en particular y tomar decisiones de forma dinámica, sin olvidar que los privilegios adquiridos se pueden perder o ver incrementados en función del uso que se hace de ellos.

I don't think that there is a single answer to that question.

Calentario de Adviento 2014 / Advent Calendar 2014

Otro año más, estamos en Adviento, a sólo 4 semanas de Navidad, y queremos hacer algo especial para prepararnos para el cumpleaños de Jesús.

One more year we are in Advent, only 4 weeks before Christmas, and we want to do something special to get ready for Jesus' birthday.

El año pasado, hicimos muchas cosas para Navidad y este año, como haremos menos, igual aprovecho y os enseño alguna cosilla que hicimos el año pasado.

Last year, we did lots of things for Christmas and this year, because we are going to do less, I might try to show you some of the stuff that we did last year.

En cualquier caso, ayer fuimos a una tienda de a dollar y compramos unas cuantas bolsas con motivos navideños, pegatinas, chucuerías y algunas manualidades de pequeño tamaño para tener una pequeña sorpresa para cada día.

Anyway, we went to the dollar store yesterday and we bought a bunch of Christmas loot bags, stickers, treats and some little crafts to have a little surprise every day.

A parte del calendario haremos algunas manualidades y contaremos cuentos de Navidad. Ya os iremos contando.

In addition to the calendar, we will do some crafts and tell some Christmas stories. We will let you know.

Vivir en Canadá: Buscar Casa / Live in Canada: Find a home

El otro día, me pedíais en los comentarios que hablara un poco de nuestras experiencias en la ciudad en que vivimos y de las cosas que no me gustan. Si no os importa, lo voy a transformar un poco y hablar de los retos de mudarse al extranjero a los que nos hemos enfrentado.

The other day in the comments, you asked me to talk about the experiences that we are having in the city where we live and the things that I don´t like. If you don´t mind, I´ll change it a bit and talk about the challenges that we are facing moving abroad.

Creo que haré una pequeña serie que recapitularé en algún momento.

I think that I will make a little series that I will recapitulate at some point.

De momento, empecemos por el principio: Encontrar casa.

By now, let´s begin in the begining: Finding a home.

Puede parecer evidente, pero buscar casa en una ciudad que no conoces es toda una aventura. Puedes buscar por internet, para ver qué zonas recomiendan, pero, basándome en que en Madrid, ante la misma pregunta, recomendaban el Barrio de Salamanca, La Moraleja y La Finca, os podéis hacer una idea de los precios de las zonas que recomendaban en internet. Venga no.

It can seem obvious but finding a home in a city that you don´t know is an adventure. You can search in the internet to know what areas they recommend. However, and considering that they recommend the Salamanca Neighbourhood, La Moraleja and La Finca in Madrid, you can imagine the prices of the areas that they recommended on the internet. No way.

Teníamos un presupuesto y una serie de condiciones de tamaño y distancia al trabajo. Así, para empezar, nos parecía suficiente. Pero no encontrábamos nada. La combinación de las tres cosas sencillamente no existía. Probamos a reducir tamaño y empezamos a encontrar algo.

We had a budget and some conditions regarding the size and distance to my work. It seemed enough for a beginning but we couldn´t find anything. The combination of the three things just didn´t exist. We tried to reduce the size and some stuff began to arise.

¿Habéis oído hablar de las chinches? Pues resulta que son una de las grandes plagas de norteamérica. Y no estoy hablando de barrios pobres y moteles de carretera, estoy hablando de que puedes tener la mala suerte de encontrarte con ellas en un hotelazo de 5 estrellas.

Have you ever heard about bedbugs? Well, it seems that they are a plage here in North America. And no, I am not talking about poor neighbourhoods or road motels, I´m talking about having bad luck and finding them even in 5 stars hotels.

Los tratamientos contra las chinches son muy caros, así que el hotel de 5 estrellas se gasta su dinerillo cuando hay algún caso y te puedes arriesgar a volver. ¡Pero, ay del pobre incauto que se mete en un edificio en el que haya chinches y poca pasta! Estás perdido, majo.

The bed bug treatments are very pricy and the 5 star hotels spend some money to get rid of them, so you can even go back to one that had a problem in the past. But behold you poor unwary guys who go to an apartment with bed bugs in a place with economic challenges! You are doomed.

¿Os he contado que aquí se paga el alquiler del primer año por adelantado, así para empezar a hablar?

Have I ever told you that here you have to pay the first rental year in advance just to begin to talk?

Pues echad cuentas y os haréis una idea del marrón en el que te metes si acabas en una casa en la que haya chinches. Y todas las casa que encontrábamos estaban en casas en las que había chinches.

Just do you calculations and you´ll notice the kind of problem that a home with bedbugs can be. And there were bedbugs in all the buildings that we were finding.

Si alguna vez venís para acá, bien sea para quedaros o sólo de vacaciones, os recomiendo la página Bedbug Registry. Ahí podéis poner nombres de hoteles o direcciones y os dirá si han encontrado información sobre chinches en ese sitio. 

If you ever come here to live or on holidays, I recommend you the Bedbug Registry website. It allows you to check the name of a hotel or an address and find out if there is any information about bedbugs in that place.

El caso es que, entre eso y que solían estar en barrios muy malos (cuando ves a alguien pinchándose en la puerta del edificio en el que estás visitando una casa, te llevas una cierta sensación de inseguridad), nos dimos cuenta de que seguíamos fuera de mercado.

The thing is that, between that and the fact that they were in very bad negihbourhoods (when you see someone having a drugs shot at the building gate you realize that the place could be quite unsafe), we noticed that we were out of the market.

Otra vez tocó rebajar nuestras espectativas y subir nuestro presupuesto. Y fue entonces cuando hice lo más inteligente que he hecho desde que estoy aquí: Contactar a una agencia.

We had to reduce our expectations again and rise our budget. And then is when I made the better decision that I have made since we arrived: I contacted a Real State Agent.

Reconozco que me resistía, porque en España te cobran un mes de comisión y, si podía evitármelo, me lo evitaría; pero los días pasaban y estábamos en un hotel, así que, al final, me iba a salir lo comido por lo servido. ¡Pues no! Porque aquí el inquilino no paga comisiones, sólo el casero, así que nos empezaron a enseñar apartamentos que cumplían nuestras nuevas condiciones.

I have to confess that I was reluctant because in Spain you have to pay them a moth as a commision and I wanted to avoid it if I could, but the days were going by and we were in a hotel. In the end, it was not goingto be cheaper. Wrong! It was much cheaper. Here the tenant doesn´t pay commisions, just the landlord, and we begun to visit apartaments (condos they call them here) that met our new conditions.

Habíamos pasado de buscar tres dormitorios a un dormitorio+Den, que es básicamente una habitación sin puerta ni ventana. También habíamos pasado de un presupuesto de unos 1300 CAD al mes a 2000 CAD, eso sí, contando con que nos incluyera los gastos (lo cual está por verse).

We changed our idea of three bedrooms for one room+Den, which is basically a room without door or window. We also changed our budget from around 1300 CAD per month to 2000 CAD including utilities (we´ll see if it ends up being true).

Tras unas cuantas visitas, nos debatíamos entre un apartamento con una habitación y dos den, a los que habían puesto puertas, en un edificio con piscina; u otro con dos dormitorios ¡con ventanas y todo! que tenía unas vistas impresionantes y una azotea con barbacoas que ni la CN Tower.

After some visits, we were deciding between a condo with a room and two dens with doors in a building with a swimmingpool and another one with two rooms (windows included!) with amazing views and a roof with barbacues that the CN Tower can hardly match.

La piscina tiraba, así que fuimos a por ése. Pero no, no nos lo alquilaban, porque querían venderlo y, sólo si no lo vendían en un par de meses lo alquilarían.

The swimmingpool was quite something and we decided to go for that one. But no, it was not for rent. They wanted to sell it and would rent it in a couple of months if they couldn´t sell it.

Al final, terminamos eligiendo la opción B. Y llegó el momento del papeleo. Teníamos que entregar más papeles que para pedir una hipoteca, incluidos certificados de deuda y un montón de cosas más. Y, por supuesto, pagar un año por adelantado en cheques con fecha de cada mes.

In the end, we chose option B. And then we got to the paperwork. We had to provide more papers than to sign a mortage, including debt certificates and lots of other things. And, of course, pay a year in advance in post-dated checks.

Ni podíamos conseguir los papeles, ni el banco nos había dado un talonario. Un desastre, vamos. Pero bueno, los caseros se tiraron el pisto y nos aceptaron con los papeles que pudimos conseguir. Eso sí, posibilidad de renegociar el precio a la baja cero patatero, porque bastante favor nos hacían alquilándonos la casa.

We were unable to get all the papers and the bank hadn´t given us any checks. A disaster, of course. Anyway, the landlords accepted us, although we had no change to negotiate the price, considering that they were making us the favor of renting us the condo without the papers. 

Y así conseguimos nuestra casa sin amueblar.

And that is how we found our unfurnished home.
