¿A qué edad el primer móvil? / What age for the first cellphone?

Creo que el debate más relevante no es si deben o no tener un móvil, sino qué formas de comunicación ponemos a su alcance y bajo qué condiciones.

I think that the most relevant question is not if they should or not have a cellphone but what communication tools do we give them and under what conditions.

Si queremos poder llamarles y que nos llamen, el móvil más básico (y barato) es más que suficiente. Pero eso no es ni lo que ellos están pidiendo, ni el modo en el que quieren usarlo.

If we want to call them and for them to call us, the most basic cellphone (and the cheapest) is more than enough. However, that's not what they are asking for or the use that they plan to give it.

Los niños quieren un juguete con acceso a internet que les permita instalar juegos y otras aplicaciones, a la par que comunicarse con sus amigos por mensajería. En pocas palabras, quieren tener internet en el bolsillo, a ser posible 24/7.

The kids want a tyoy with internet access which allows them to install videogames and other apps, as much as it allows them to chat with their friends. Going to the point, they want to have intrernet in their pocket, 24/7 if possible.

Internet no es bueno ni malo y lo de menos es el dispositivo que utilizamos para acceder. Internet es esa famosa "cuidad global" en la que, como cualquier ciudad, hay zonas mejores y peores, más seguras y más peligrosas, buenos ciudadanos y auténtico monstruos.

Internet is not good nor bad and the device that we use to access doesn't matter at all. Internet is that famous "global town" in which, as in any other city, there are better and worse zones, safwer and more dangerous, good citizens and real monsters.

Del mismo modo que educamos a nuestros hijos a ir por la calle, hemos de educarles para navegar por internet.

The same way that we educate our kids to move in the street, we have to educate them to surf the net.

Si no dejarías a tu niño de 8 años solo en medio de una gran ciudad, sin ninguna referencia y sin más razón que porque a su amigo Pepe sus papás le dejan pasearse por donde quiera cuando le dé la gana, ¿por qué le vas a dejar solo delante de una pantalla, sin ninguna orientación y sin más razón que porque todos los niños de su clase lo hacen?

If you wouldn't leave your 8 year-old child in the middle of a big city, without aby references and with no other reason than that Joe's parents allow him to go wherever he wants any time, why would leave your kid in front of a screen, with no guidelines and with no other reason than the fact that they schoolmates do it?

Los niños han de aprender a moverse por internet igual que en el resto de los ámbitos de la vida y nuestra obligación es asegurarnos de que lo hacen de acuerdo a su madurez, conocimientos y capacidad.

The kids need to learn to handle internet the same way that they do with evrrything else in life and it is our responsibility to ensure that they do it according to their maturity, knowledge and capabilities.

No creo que haya una respuesta única para tu pregunta. Es comparable a si preguntaras cuándo se debe dejar a un niño/adolescente moverse por el mundo y volver a casa a una hora determinada. No hay una única respuesta válida. Cada familia tiene que valorar el caso de cada hijo en particular y tomar decisiones de forma dinámica, sin olvidar que los privilegios adquiridos se pueden perder o ver incrementados en función del uso que se hace de ellos.

I don't think that there is a single answer to that question.

Calentario de Adviento 2014 / Advent Calendar 2014

Otro año más, estamos en Adviento, a sólo 4 semanas de Navidad, y queremos hacer algo especial para prepararnos para el cumpleaños de Jesús.

One more year we are in Advent, only 4 weeks before Christmas, and we want to do something special to get ready for Jesus' birthday.

El año pasado, hicimos muchas cosas para Navidad y este año, como haremos menos, igual aprovecho y os enseño alguna cosilla que hicimos el año pasado.

Last year, we did lots of things for Christmas and this year, because we are going to do less, I might try to show you some of the stuff that we did last year.

En cualquier caso, ayer fuimos a una tienda de a dollar y compramos unas cuantas bolsas con motivos navideños, pegatinas, chucuerías y algunas manualidades de pequeño tamaño para tener una pequeña sorpresa para cada día.

Anyway, we went to the dollar store yesterday and we bought a bunch of Christmas loot bags, stickers, treats and some little crafts to have a little surprise every day.

A parte del calendario haremos algunas manualidades y contaremos cuentos de Navidad. Ya os iremos contando.

In addition to the calendar, we will do some crafts and tell some Christmas stories. We will let you know.

Vivir en Canadá: Buscar Casa / Live in Canada: Find a home

El otro día, me pedíais en los comentarios que hablara un poco de nuestras experiencias en la ciudad en que vivimos y de las cosas que no me gustan. Si no os importa, lo voy a transformar un poco y hablar de los retos de mudarse al extranjero a los que nos hemos enfrentado.

The other day in the comments, you asked me to talk about the experiences that we are having in the city where we live and the things that I don´t like. If you don´t mind, I´ll change it a bit and talk about the challenges that we are facing moving abroad.

Creo que haré una pequeña serie que recapitularé en algún momento.

I think that I will make a little series that I will recapitulate at some point.

De momento, empecemos por el principio: Encontrar casa.

By now, let´s begin in the begining: Finding a home.

Puede parecer evidente, pero buscar casa en una ciudad que no conoces es toda una aventura. Puedes buscar por internet, para ver qué zonas recomiendan, pero, basándome en que en Madrid, ante la misma pregunta, recomendaban el Barrio de Salamanca, La Moraleja y La Finca, os podéis hacer una idea de los precios de las zonas que recomendaban en internet. Venga no.

It can seem obvious but finding a home in a city that you don´t know is an adventure. You can search in the internet to know what areas they recommend. However, and considering that they recommend the Salamanca Neighbourhood, La Moraleja and La Finca in Madrid, you can imagine the prices of the areas that they recommended on the internet. No way.

Teníamos un presupuesto y una serie de condiciones de tamaño y distancia al trabajo. Así, para empezar, nos parecía suficiente. Pero no encontrábamos nada. La combinación de las tres cosas sencillamente no existía. Probamos a reducir tamaño y empezamos a encontrar algo.

We had a budget and some conditions regarding the size and distance to my work. It seemed enough for a beginning but we couldn´t find anything. The combination of the three things just didn´t exist. We tried to reduce the size and some stuff began to arise.

¿Habéis oído hablar de las chinches? Pues resulta que son una de las grandes plagas de norteamérica. Y no estoy hablando de barrios pobres y moteles de carretera, estoy hablando de que puedes tener la mala suerte de encontrarte con ellas en un hotelazo de 5 estrellas.

Have you ever heard about bedbugs? Well, it seems that they are a plage here in North America. And no, I am not talking about poor neighbourhoods or road motels, I´m talking about having bad luck and finding them even in 5 stars hotels.

Los tratamientos contra las chinches son muy caros, así que el hotel de 5 estrellas se gasta su dinerillo cuando hay algún caso y te puedes arriesgar a volver. ¡Pero, ay del pobre incauto que se mete en un edificio en el que haya chinches y poca pasta! Estás perdido, majo.

The bed bug treatments are very pricy and the 5 star hotels spend some money to get rid of them, so you can even go back to one that had a problem in the past. But behold you poor unwary guys who go to an apartment with bed bugs in a place with economic challenges! You are doomed.

¿Os he contado que aquí se paga el alquiler del primer año por adelantado, así para empezar a hablar?

Have I ever told you that here you have to pay the first rental year in advance just to begin to talk?

Pues echad cuentas y os haréis una idea del marrón en el que te metes si acabas en una casa en la que haya chinches. Y todas las casa que encontrábamos estaban en casas en las que había chinches.

Just do you calculations and you´ll notice the kind of problem that a home with bedbugs can be. And there were bedbugs in all the buildings that we were finding.

Si alguna vez venís para acá, bien sea para quedaros o sólo de vacaciones, os recomiendo la página Bedbug Registry. Ahí podéis poner nombres de hoteles o direcciones y os dirá si han encontrado información sobre chinches en ese sitio. 

If you ever come here to live or on holidays, I recommend you the Bedbug Registry website. It allows you to check the name of a hotel or an address and find out if there is any information about bedbugs in that place.

El caso es que, entre eso y que solían estar en barrios muy malos (cuando ves a alguien pinchándose en la puerta del edificio en el que estás visitando una casa, te llevas una cierta sensación de inseguridad), nos dimos cuenta de que seguíamos fuera de mercado.

The thing is that, between that and the fact that they were in very bad negihbourhoods (when you see someone having a drugs shot at the building gate you realize that the place could be quite unsafe), we noticed that we were out of the market.

Otra vez tocó rebajar nuestras espectativas y subir nuestro presupuesto. Y fue entonces cuando hice lo más inteligente que he hecho desde que estoy aquí: Contactar a una agencia.

We had to reduce our expectations again and rise our budget. And then is when I made the better decision that I have made since we arrived: I contacted a Real State Agent.

Reconozco que me resistía, porque en España te cobran un mes de comisión y, si podía evitármelo, me lo evitaría; pero los días pasaban y estábamos en un hotel, así que, al final, me iba a salir lo comido por lo servido. ¡Pues no! Porque aquí el inquilino no paga comisiones, sólo el casero, así que nos empezaron a enseñar apartamentos que cumplían nuestras nuevas condiciones.

I have to confess that I was reluctant because in Spain you have to pay them a moth as a commision and I wanted to avoid it if I could, but the days were going by and we were in a hotel. In the end, it was not goingto be cheaper. Wrong! It was much cheaper. Here the tenant doesn´t pay commisions, just the landlord, and we begun to visit apartaments (condos they call them here) that met our new conditions.

Habíamos pasado de buscar tres dormitorios a un dormitorio+Den, que es básicamente una habitación sin puerta ni ventana. También habíamos pasado de un presupuesto de unos 1300 CAD al mes a 2000 CAD, eso sí, contando con que nos incluyera los gastos (lo cual está por verse).

We changed our idea of three bedrooms for one room+Den, which is basically a room without door or window. We also changed our budget from around 1300 CAD per month to 2000 CAD including utilities (we´ll see if it ends up being true).

Tras unas cuantas visitas, nos debatíamos entre un apartamento con una habitación y dos den, a los que habían puesto puertas, en un edificio con piscina; u otro con dos dormitorios ¡con ventanas y todo! que tenía unas vistas impresionantes y una azotea con barbacoas que ni la CN Tower.

After some visits, we were deciding between a condo with a room and two dens with doors in a building with a swimmingpool and another one with two rooms (windows included!) with amazing views and a roof with barbacues that the CN Tower can hardly match.

La piscina tiraba, así que fuimos a por ése. Pero no, no nos lo alquilaban, porque querían venderlo y, sólo si no lo vendían en un par de meses lo alquilarían.

The swimmingpool was quite something and we decided to go for that one. But no, it was not for rent. They wanted to sell it and would rent it in a couple of months if they couldn´t sell it.

Al final, terminamos eligiendo la opción B. Y llegó el momento del papeleo. Teníamos que entregar más papeles que para pedir una hipoteca, incluidos certificados de deuda y un montón de cosas más. Y, por supuesto, pagar un año por adelantado en cheques con fecha de cada mes.

In the end, we chose option B. And then we got to the paperwork. We had to provide more papers than to sign a mortage, including debt certificates and lots of other things. And, of course, pay a year in advance in post-dated checks.

Ni podíamos conseguir los papeles, ni el banco nos había dado un talonario. Un desastre, vamos. Pero bueno, los caseros se tiraron el pisto y nos aceptaron con los papeles que pudimos conseguir. Eso sí, posibilidad de renegociar el precio a la baja cero patatero, porque bastante favor nos hacían alquilándonos la casa.

We were unable to get all the papers and the bank hadn´t given us any checks. A disaster, of course. Anyway, the landlords accepted us, although we had no change to negotiate the price, considering that they were making us the favor of renting us the condo without the papers. 

Y así conseguimos nuestra casa sin amueblar.

And that is how we found our unfurnished home.

Una fiesta multicultural / A multicultural party

El otro día fue el cumpleaños de Pirañita y, como no, el fin de semana celebramos su cumpleaños.

The other day was Pirañita´s birthday and, of course, we celebrated a party on the weekend. 

Quiso invitar a tres amigos del cole y al hijo de unos compañeros de trabajo con los que tenemos muy buen trato. Nos juntamos cinco familias, con un total de siete niños de entre cero y cuatro años, y 8 adultos.

She wanted to invite three friends from school and the son of my co-worker with whom we have a great relationship. We were 5 families, with a total of seven children in ages cero-to-four-years-old and 8 adults. 

De las quince personas presentes, sólo el padre de uno de los niños hablaba sólo inglés. Todos los demás, su hijo incluido, hablamos otro idioma como lengua madre.

From the fifteen people in the room, only the father of one of the kids spoke only English. The rest of us, including his son, had another language as mother tongue.

Cinco familias, seis nacionalidades: Canadiense (por supuesto), koreana, francesa, italiana, polaca y española. Una hermosa mezcla de gente que puedes encontrar en cualquier rincón de esta ciudad.

Five families, six nationalities: Canadian (of course), Korean, French, Italian, Polish and Spanish. A beautiful mixture of people that you can find turning any corner in this city. 

Hay muchas cosas que no me gustan de esta ciudad, pero reconozco que su multiculturalidad es algo que merece la pena vivir.

There are many things that I don´t like of this city, but I have to confess that this multiculturality is something that is worth to live. 

4 años / 4 years

Mi suegra siempre habla de sus partos en los cumpleaños de sus hijos. Lleva haciéndolo más de 30 años, y esperamos que siga haciéndolo, por lo menos, otros 30.

My mother-in-law always talks about her deliveries on her children's birthdays. She has been doing it for more than 30 years, and we hope thar she will keep doing it for, at least, another 30.

Creo que cuando pensamos en los años que han pasado, no podemos dejar de recordar aquel día en que, por primera vez, tuvimos a nuestros hijos en nuestros brazos.

I belive that, when we think in the years that have gone by, we cannot avoid remembering that day in which we had our children in our arms.

Hoy hace 4 años de mi primer parto, pero yo no fui la protagonista de aquel día, como no lo soy hoy.

Today it is 4 years since my first delivery, but I wasn't the main of it, as I am not today either.

Hoy es su día, el día de mi Pirañita. ¡4 añazos ya!

Today is her day, my Pirañita's day. 4 years old already!

Atrás quedó el bebé, incluso lo que aquí llaman toddler. Es una niña, una niña buena, inteligente, sensible, con carácter, dulce,maravillosa. La cosa más hermosa del mundo. Mi niña.

She is no longer a baby, not even a toddler. She is a girl, a good, smart, sensible, with character, sweet, wonderful girl. She is the most awesome thing in the World. My girl.

Volviendo a los viejos hábitos, veamos dónde estamos.

Going back to the old habits, let's see where we are.

Aún no tiene sus patrones motrices completamente desarrollados. Salta cada vez más alto y más lejos, tanto con un pie, como con los dos. Sin embargo, la coordinación del tren superior con el inferior aún ha de mejorar, sobre todo en la carrera, el lanzamiento y las recepciones.

Her basic motor skills are not fully developed. She is jumping higher and further, with one or two feet alike. Hpwever, the coordination of her arms and legs needs to improve, specially while running, throwing and catching.

Su motricidad fina también tendrá que mejorar un poco, pero ya escribe sus letras y hace dibujos figurativos de mucha calidad. Sorprende, sobre todo, el nivel de detalle y la presencia de transparencias (muchas personas las dibuja con pezones y hombligo).

Her fine motpr skills will need also to improve, but she already write her letters and draws images of high quality. It is surprising the level of detail and the transparencies (she draws many people with nipples and belly button included).

En lo social es donde ahora mismo estoy viendo más avances. Me habla de sus amigas del cole, de los chantajes emocionales (si no haces lo que quiero, no soy tu amiga), del rechazo que sufre por parte de algunos compañeros, de los comentarios hechos para herir (tus pantalones son de niño), de cómo gestiona la tristeza o los enfados. Estamos entrando en una nueva etapa en la que mamá ya no podrá estar ahí para ella en todo momento, en la que lo que piensan otros le afecta, un nuevo reto para ella y para nosotros, que vemos cómo otros adquieren poder para hacerle daño sin que podamos evitarlo.

The social environment is where I am currently noticing more advances. She talks about her school friends, the emotional extortion (if you don't do what I want, I am not your friend anymore), the rejection that she sufferes from other kids, the words said with the sole intention of hurting (your trousers are fpor boys), the way she manages sadness and anger. We are in the beginning of a new period in which Mum won't be there for her all the time, in which other pople's opinions count. It is a new challwnge for her, and for us, for we will witness how other people get the power to harm her, without being able to avoid it.

Pero no es malo. Creo que ella está encontrando sus propias estrategias para gestionar esas situaciones y empieza a definir de forma clara quiénes son sus amigos, los compañeros de juegos, las personas indiferentes y aquellos con los que no va a jugar (generalmente porque son agresivos con ella). Las relaciones sociales pueden ser en ocasiones complejas.

But it's not bad. I think that she is finding her own ways to handle these situations and that she begins to be able to tell who her friends are, who are the kids that she jus plays with, who are the indiferent people and who are those she doesn't plan to play with (often kids who are agressive to her). Social relationships can sometimes be complex.

Por otro lado, su relación con su hermana es estupenda. Se pasan el día entre el juego y la pelea, como sucede en toda relación fraterna que se precie. Son monísimas cuando se abrazan para decirse lo mucho que se quieren, aunque cinco minutos después estén a la gresca porque quieren el mismo juguete.

On the other hand, her relationship with her sister is wonderful. They spemd the day between playing am fighting, as it tends to happen in a healthy sibling relationship. They are extremely cute when they hug each other to show how big the love between the is, although they can be fighting over a toy five minutes later.

Su desarrollo lingüístico es muy bueno. Noto que ahora es el inglés el que avanza a todo trapo, aunque el español no se estanca. Me hace mucha gracia su acento canadiense.

Her language developmemt is very good. I realize that her English is improving very fast, while her Spanish keeps on its way. I think that her Canadian accent is quite funny.

Otro año más, mi Vida. Sigue creciendo para convertirte en la maravillosa mujer que intuyo. Te amo con todo mi corazón. No lo olvides nunca.

Yet another year, my Life. Keep growimg to become the wonderful woman that I can feel. I love you with all my heart. Never forget it.

Esa letra está en mi nombre / That letter is in my name

El otro día estábamos en una oficina gubernamental haciendo cola para una gestión con las niñas y Cachorrito se acercó a un cartel y me llamó para que me acercara con ella. 

The other day, we were in a goverment office to go through some paperwork with the girls and Cachorrito went to a poster and called me so that I would come with her. 

- Mama, this letter is in my name. (Mamá, está letra está en mi nombre). 

Me sentí muy orgullosa de ver quemi niña de dos años y medio ya sabe cuál es la primera letra de su nombre. 

I felt very proud that my two and a half year old daughter knew the first letter of her name. 

Entonces, señaló otra letra y dijo: 

- Look, Mama, this one is in my name too! (¡Mira, Mamá, está también está en mi nombre!). 

El Superpapá ha estado trabajando las letras con ellas y ya empieza a reconocerlas e identificarlas con su nombre, el de su hermana, Papá, Mamá... Los nombre más básicos que escribimos con frecuencia. 

Superpapa has been working with the letters with them and she begins to recognize them and identify them as belonging to her name, her sister´s, Papa, Mama... The most basic names that we write more often. 

Siempre he sabido que mi hija menor leería antes que la mayor, si le dedicábamos el tiempo necesario a trabajar ése área. Ahora creo que la cosa estará reñida, si seguimo haciéndolo, porque Pirañita, al ser más mayor, ha madurado mucho en el tema de reconocer letras, patrones... 

I´ve always known that mi younger daughter would read before the older one if we would decide to work that area with her. Now I think that it´s going to be very close if we keep doing it, because Pirañita, being older, has matured a lot about letter recognizing, patters... 

No es una competición y, por tanto, no metemos prisa a ninguna, ni forzamos situaciones. Quieremos que las dos se sientan felicies y competentes en materia de lectura y creo que es donde nos encontramos ahora. Seguiremos trabajando en esta línea y en este sentido. 

It is not a competition and, as a result, we don´t push any of them, neither we force any situation. We want the two of them to be happy and feel confident when it comes to reading and I think that there is where we are. We will keep working in this line and direction.

La vuelta al cole... en Canadá / Back to school... in Canada

Hoy empieza septiembre y se acerca la famosa "vuelta al cole". En otro tiempo, pocos meses atrás, hubiera estado pensando en lo poco que me gusta el colegio y en lo que disfrutaría educando a mis hijas en casa. Ahora pienso lo mismo, pero tengo tan poco tiempo que el colegio es la menor de mis preocupaciones. Me conformaría con poder asegurar unas horas con ellas cada día. 

September begins today and the "back to school" process is here. Some time ago, just a couple of months, I would have been thinking in how little I like school and how much I could enjoy homeschooling my daguthers. I keep thinking the same but, with the little time that I have available, shool is my smallest preocupation. I would be happy if I could just grant some hours a day with them. 

Pirañita irá al cole a partir de la semana que viene. Aunque en España ya estuvo escolarizada, aquí entrará en el primer curso en el que los niños van al colegio propiamente dicho. Aquí lo llaman Junior Kindergarden. 

Pirañita will start school next week. Although she was already going to school in Spain, she will be attending the first course kids do at school here. They call it Junior Kindergarden. 

Sé que se adaptará bien. Ha pasado 15 días en una colonia y ha estado muy bien, alegre y motivada. La ausencia de barrera idiomática ayuda, pero también el hecho de ser una niña muy bien socializada. 

I know that she will be fine. She has spent 15 days on a camp and she has been well, happy and motivated. The absence of a linguistic barrier helps, but also the fact that she is a very well socialized girl. 

Cachorrito también ha ido al campamento. De hecho, han estado en la misma clase, lo que ha facilitado mucho el proceso para ambas. 

Cachorrito has also attended the camp. In fact, they were in the same class, which eased all the process for the two of them. 

Sabía que Cachorrito estaría contenta, porque tenía muchas ganas de ir al colegio, como su hermana mayor. No ha habido lágrimas de despedida ni grandes dramas. Sé que ha llorado algún día cuando la han despertado de la siesta, pero en casa también lo hace si siente que necesita dormir más. Si nos lanzamos a mandarla a la guardería, creo que esta primera experiencia será un puente perfecto. 

I knew that Cachorrito would be happy because she really wanted to go to school, like her elder sister. There has been no farewell tears or big dramas. I know thas she has woken up crying after the nap, but it also happens at home when we wake her up and she feels the need to sleep more. If we decide to send her to daycare, this first experience will be a great starter. 

El Superpapá seguirá un poco más en casa. Está muy contento con las peques y no tiene prisa por perder su situación privilegiada de papá a tiempo completo. Es cansado y a veces se hace cuesta arriba, pero ha descubierto el gran tesoro que las personas que hemos pasado por eso conocemos: Cada segundo merece la pena. 

Superpapa will reamin at home a bit longer. He is very happy with the little ones and is in no hurry to let his privileged situation as a full time father. It is tiring and sometimes even hard but he has found the tresure that all those of us who have been there know: Every second is worth it. 

Os deseo a todos una feliz vuelta al cole (o al no cole). ¡Feliz septiembre!
