Tengo una amiga que está embarazada de su tercer hijo. Tras una de las ecografías, le han dicho que tiene el intestino inmaduro y que eso supone un riesgo del X% de que haya alguna patología asociada. Inmediatamente, le derivaron para hacer la amniocentesis.
I have a friend who is pregnant of her third child. After an ecography, she's been told that the baby's intestines are inmature and that this is related to a X% of patolofy incidence. She was immediatly sent to have an amniocentesis.
Ella ha dicho que no quiere amniocentesis.
She said that she doesn't want it.
La amniocentesis es una prueba que tiene en torno a un 1% de riesgo de muerte del feto, un porcentaje mayor que el riesgo a que su bebé tenga una discapacidad, basándose en los datos que tienen.
The amniocentesis is a test with around a 1% risk of fetus death, a higher percentage than the one the baby seems to have to be disable, according to the available data.
Mi amiga es médico y ha valorado los riesgos. No quiere la prueba.
My friend is a doctor and has ponderated the risks. She does not want the test.
Cuando así se lo expresó a su obstetra, éste le dijo que tenía que hacer la prueba y que era una irresponsabilidad que no la hiciera. Le reprochó que si el bebé nace con una discapacidad será por su culpa, por no haberse hecho la prueba y alegó que él tenía la responsabilidad de hacerla para realizar el diagnóstico pertinente.
When she told he gynecologist that she didn't want the test, he said that it was a must and that it wasn't responsible not to make it. He also reproached her that if the baby had a disability it would be all her fault for choosing not to run the test. He said that it was his responsability to diagnose any posible illness.
Ella se mantuvo firme. No. Intentó explicarle al médico que es su hijo, que lo va a querer igual y que un diagnóstico en firme no iba a cambiar su determinación de tenerlo. Esa prueba no va a mejorar sus posibilidades de supervivencia, sino quizá lo contrario.
She didn't conceed. No. She tried to explain the doctor that it was her child they were talking about, that she would love her baby the same and that a diagnosis would not make her change her mind about having her child. The test won't improve the surviving chances for the baby, and can even mean the opposite.
Las presiones han continuado, pero ella se ha mantenido firme.
They kept trying to convince her, but she didn't change her mind.
Esta situación no es excepcional y me consta que hay mujeres que se enfrentan a muchas presiones para realizarse pruebas, e incluso abortos, que ellas no desean.
This situation is not an exception and I know women who has suffered a lot of pressure, not only to run a test, but also to get an abortion, even when they didn't want one or the other.
Una vez leí una entrevista a un tocólogo en El País que decía que era su obligación asegurarse de que todos los niños nacieran sanos. Y, dado de que no hablaba de técnicas intrauterinas, sino de aborto; lo que quería decir es que sentía obligado a asegurarse de que los niños enfermos no nacieran.
I once read an interview in El Pais where a gynecologist said that it was his duty to ensure that all the children were born healthy. And, considering that he wasn't talking about intrauterine techniques, but abortion, what he meant was that his duty was not to let disable children to be born.
Los médicos proponen las pruebas, pero son los pacientes los que deciden si las quieren o no. He aquí otro ámbito más en el que me gustaría pedir respeto.
The doctors propose the tests, but the patient has the right to choose to run it or not. This is another area where I want to ask respect for.

Varitas mágicas / Magic wands
Esta actividad la hicimos hace unas semanas, pero es que no me da la vida.
It's been some weeks since we made this activity, but life is hard on me lately.
En cualquier caso, y como no hay mal que por bien no venga, estamos en plena Semana de las Hadas de Trapeando: hilos y trapos, así que aprovecho y así entro en otro de los muchos sorteos internáuticos que he perdido o me queda por perder (si es que los afortunados en amores tenemos esta perversa suerte en el juego...).
However, and looking on the bright side, this is the Semana de las Hadas (Faeries week) of Trapeando: Hilos y trapos, so I take advantage of the situation to participate in another draw to loose (in my country we say that if you are lucky in love matters, you are unlucky in gambling).

That's why her sister identified the spoon as a treasure and the fight magically started.
Entonces, decidí que lo mejor que podíamos hacer era una actividad y qué mejor que unas varitas con las que pudieran jugar justo después de hacerlas.
Then is when I decided that making an activity was in order, and what a better one than creating their own wands to begin to play as soon as they were finished.

Dos canutos del papel de cocina, una estrella recortada de un sobre de cartón, rotuladores, purpurina, lazos, washi-tape, pegatinas... y teníamos material suficiente.

Pintaron un poco sus estrellas, yo doblé los canutos por la mitad y los fijé con washi-tape, unimos todo y añadimos los lazos, que rizamos con ayuda de unas tijeras.
They painter a bit, I bended the rolls, and fastened them with washi-tape, we put everything together and added the ribbon, which we rippled with the scissors.
Disfrutaron mucho de la actividad y esas varitas ya han tenido más uso que la mayoría de los regalos de Navidad. ¿Qué más se puede pedir?
They did enjoy the activity and these wands have been used more that most of the Christmas gifts already. What else can I ask for?

24 meses con Cachorrito /24 months with Cachorrito
Reconozco que esta entrada me cuesta. Hoy es el día que oficialmente dejo de tener bebés, y es posible que sea una situación permanente, porque esta mañana le he dicho al Superpapá que necesitamos otro y me ha dicho que eso debía significar que había dormio bien...
I must confess that it is hard to me to write this post. Today is the day when I stop having babies, maybe forever. This morning, I told my husband that we should have another baby and he answered that tonight seemed to have been a good sleeping night to me...
Y ahí estaba Cachorrito, echa una bola en nuestra cama, durmiendo como un angelito, a escasas dos horas de que hiciera dos años de que la cogiera por debajo de las axilas y la colocara sobre mí, diciéndole lo bonita que era y lo mucho que la quería. Nuestra primera y última conversación en español.
An there was our Cachorrito, sleeping like an angel in our bed, just two hours before it were two years since I took them under the arms and pulled her to my chest, telling her how gorgeous she was and how much I loved her. Our first and last conversation in Spanish.
Está preciosa, maravillosa y llena de energía.
She is beautiful, awesome and full of energy.
No para de moverse, de correr, trepar, saltar, jugar... Eso hace que, a nivel de motricidad gruesa sea una niña muy completa.
She never stops running, climbing, jumping, playing... That's why her gross motor skills are so well developed.
Su destreza manual me asombra, sobre todo en lo que se refiere al dibujo. No sólo hace dibujos figurativos, es que el nivel de detalle es altísimo. Además, va describiendo lo que dibuja: "Un ojo. Un otro ojo. Oreja. Un otro oreja. Pelo..."
Her fine motor skills amaze me, specially when it comes to drawing. Not only she is drawing actual figures, but also with a great detail level. Even more, she describes what she is drawing: "One eye. One other eye. Ear. One other ear. Hair..."
Ultimamente, le encanta disfrazarse con cualquier cosa. Se pone una diadema corriente y moliente y dice: Mi corona. Am un princess.
Lately, she loves playing with customes. She wears a basic hair diadem and she says: "My crown. Am un princess."
No me preguntéis de dónde sale tanta princesa, porque en casa no es un tema que potenciemos y no va a la guarde. Pero bueno, tampoco la tenemos aislada del mundo, según parece...
Don't ask me where does the princess thing come from. It is not anything that we enjoy at home and she does not go to the nursery. Well, it's clear that she is quite socialized...
Nos lo pasamos en grande viéndole cantar y bailar. Se inventa sus canciones, sus coreografías y no para. ¡Y no veas si coge el micrófono!
We enjoy listening to her songs and watching her dance. She creates her own songs, dance steps and does never stop. An behold if she ever gets a microphone!
Habla por los codos, tanto en español, como en inglés; aunque se decanta por el primero, y cada vez más. Además, estructura y vocaliza muy bien, pero lo mejor de todo es ver cómo razona. Pirañita hablaba menos a su edad y ver cómo evoluciona su pensamiento es algo que me encanta.
She is talking all the time, in Spanish and English alike. However, it's clear that the first one is her preferred choice. She builds clear structures and volcalizes very well, although the most amazing thing is following her thinking process. Pirañita didn't talk that well in the day and seen how she develops her thinking is awesome.
Es una niña muy sociable, tanto con adultos, como con niños. Además, es muy espabilada y ya sabe cómo apañárselas para conseguir lo que quiere con su zalamería.
She is a very sociable girl, with adults and kids alike. Even more, she is very smart and knows how to get advantage of her charm in order to get what she wants.
Su hermana y ella no paran, ni de jugar, ni de pelearse. No pueden estar juntas, ni separadas. Es maravilloso y agotador a partes iguales. ¡Cómo me alegro de haberlas tenido tan seguidas!
Her sister and her never stop, not playing, not fighting. They cannot be together, nor appart. It is marvellous and tiring at the same time. How much I rejoice that we had them in so short a period of time!
Cachorrito, ¡feliz cumpleaños! Espero que estos dos años hayan sido para ti tan maravillosos como para nosotros. Ojalá Dios te dé muchos años y alegría y felicidad. Te quiero.

Calcetines de Navidad / Christmas Stockings
Este año, no me compliqué mucho con multitud de regalos distintos. Decidí que haría calcetines de Navidad en cadena y regalaríamos uno a cada miembro de la familia.
This past Christmas, I decided to take it easy by making stockings for each member of the family.
Busqué un patrón en internet y encontré éste. Me gustó porque era grande, algo que quería, pensando en el plan que tenía para los que se quedarían en casa.
I searched for a pattern in the internet and found this one. I liked it because it was big, which is something I was looking for while I have something in mind for those which would stay at home.
Cogí el patrón, pero no seguí el tutorial. De cara a las próximas Navidades, pondré aquí el tutorial de cómo los hice, por si alguna se anima.
I took the pattern, but didn't follow the tutorial. You will have a how-to-make-them post for this year Christmas, in case you want to make your own.
Hice 16 calcetines de estos. Por un lado está genial, porque al hacerlos en cadena vas rápido, pero llega a ser un poco aburrido, si os soy sincera.
I made 16 of these stockings. On the one hand, it's great because you sew them fast while it is an almost industrial process, but it gets to be a bit boring to do the same once and again, if I tell you the truth.
Lo mejor es que, con lo bonitas que eran las telas, no necesité envolverlos para regalo. Doblados y con un lazo, mirad qué bien quedaron para empaquetar otros regalos.
The best of it is that I didn't even have to wrap them. Just bended and with a ribbon, they were the perfect wrapping for other gifts.

Primeras palabras en chino / First words in Chinese
El chino es el idioma de moda. El inglés ya no tiene glamour porque se da por sentado, y el chino se ha convertido en el idioma que los hijos de uno deberían aprender.
Chinese is the trendy language. English has lost its glamour, for it is given for granted; so the Chinese has become the language that our kids should learn.
Yo soy muy excéptica sobre que el chino sea la panacea de los idiomas aprender. Viviendo en Europa, el francés, el alemán o el sueco, incluso el portugués, me parecen muy solventes.
I'm quite skeptic about Chinese being the main of it when it comes to languages to learn. Living in Europe, French, German, Swedish, or even Portuguese, sound fine to me.

However, this trend is what makes possible to have a number of products Chinese related, like Ni-hao Kai-Lan; the show that my girls want to watch lately.
El caso es que el otro día Cachorrito me pidió que la subiera en su silla y la atara y, cuando lo hice, me dice:
- Xie xie, Yieyeh.
Y se corrige inmediatamente:
-Xie xie, Mamá.
The thing is that the other day, Cachorrito asked me to sit in her buggy and fasten her seat-belt and, when it was done, she tells me:
- Xie xie, Yieyeh.
And then she corrects herself:
- Xie xie, Mama.
Y se me cayó la baba, claro. Mi pequeñita usando palabras en un tercer idioma de forma independiente y en un contexto correcto.
And there I was, delighted of course. My little girl was independently using her first words in a third language in the appropriate context.
Al día siguiente, reencontró a su osito Winnie, que estaba en el coche, lo coge, se lo pone mirándole a la cara y le dice:
- Ni-hao, Winnie.
The next day, she found her teddy Winnie, which was in the car. She takes it and, looking into his eyes, says:
- Ni-hao, Winnie.
Siempre he pensado que estos dibujos que sueltan palabras sueltas en otro idioma eran una tomadura de pelo, pero me retracto. No servirán para aprender un idioma a un nivel comunicativo que sirva para desenvolverse, pero sí para romper el hielo; y eso también es importante.
I always thought that those TV shows where they use some random words in another language were silly; but I don't think it anymore. They won't be enough to learn how to communicate in another language, of course. However, they are enough to have a first contact with that language, and that is important too.
Chinese is the trendy language. English has lost its glamour, for it is given for granted; so the Chinese has become the language that our kids should learn.

RUMS #7: CC. Mochila con cremallera de Pandilleando
Hoy hago un 2x1: RUMS y mochila del cose conmigo de Pandilleando.
Today we have a 2x1: RUMS and the backpack from the Pandilleando's sew along.
En realidad, no es una costura tan egoísta como debiera, porque la mochila no me la voy a quedar yo. Se la voy a regalar a mi hermana por su cumpleaños, que ya ha pasado y aún no le he dado nada.
Truth be told, it is not a selfish sewing while it's going to be my sister's bithday present.
La cremallera me encantó cuando la vi. Me gusta que sea así de ancha y evidente. Creo que queda muy decorativa.
I love the zip. I like it because it is big and visible. I think that it very decorative.
La tela negra estampada es de Ikea y ya la utilicé para mi falda Siri 2.0. La tela granate es de una camiseta de pijama reciclada. Finalmente, la amarilla del forro también es reciclada, en este caso de unas cortinas de Ikea.
The black fabric with the pattern is from Ikea and I already used it for my Siri 2.0 skirt. The maroon fabric is an old pajamas t-shirt that I had for recycling. The yellow one that I used for the lining is also recycled, some old Ikea curtains.
Seguí fielmente el patrón y el tutorial de Pandilleando. Sólo añadí un pequeño bolsillo en el forro, en el lado de la espalda. Me encanta tener un bolsillito pequeño en el que meter las llaves, monedas, el pendrive o cualquiera de esas cosas pequeñas que no quiero que acaben perdidas entre el resto de trastos.
I mostly followed the amazing pattern and tutorials that Pandilleando prepared. However, I made a little change, adding a little pocket in the lining, in the back side. I love having a little pocket for keys, coins, a pendrive or any other little something that I don't want to loose between all the big stuff.
La fresa es un arimigurumi cuyo patrón podéis encontrar aquí. Le quité la vuelta 10, añadí unos snaps negros a modo de ojos y puse las hojas amarillas, para que fueran en los mismos colores que la mochila (y si no os digo que no tenía lana verde, igual hasta os lo creéis...).
The strawberry is an arimigurumi which pattern is here. I skipped the 10th round, added snaps for the eyes and crocheted the leaves in yellow, so that they would match the colors of the backpack (and if I don't tell you that I didn't have any green wool, you could even buy it...).
Me lo he pasado muy bien cosiendo esta mochila y haciendo este arimigurumi. ¡Qué ganas tenía de volver a hacer cosillas, después del parón de enero!
I really enjoyed sewing this backpack and crocheting this arimigurumi. I was totally looking forward to make some stuff after my January break!
